I think it is about time we got the SUV’s we know and almost love to finally run on diesel such as the new Suburban, Tahoe, Yukon's, expeditions, etc. we had a taste of this in the Ford Excursion and it was good.  It's time we see the 6.6l duramax in the new Yukon XL. that would be very nice.

I agree with the models you said. I also think the Hummer H2 would be the perfect candidate for the Duramax/Allison. Supposedly, the Expedition/F-150 will offer a 4.5L turbodiesel V-8 starting possibly in '08. The numbers I've heard are around 300 hp and 450 lb/ft. Not bad for a half-ton!

yes H2 a great candidate. There's a company that does conversions.  I want the "baby" 4.9 Duramax in a half ton.  A halfton crew Z71 with a duramax now that would be awesome.  My only concern is no allison.  Perhaps if the 4.9 is popular enough allison will come up with a tranny.  Maybe for once GM will beat the japanese and ford, DCX to the punch.

Okay, don't make fun of me, but I think it would be cool to have a small V-6 turbodiesel (3.0-3.5 liters) in the Chevy Colorado and Hummer H3. I'm thinking 220 or so horses and 350+ lb/ft. If it could deliver about 25 mpg, that would be one sweet package. Heck, even a 2.5-3.0L 4-banger diesel wouldn't be bad, but it would be a lot less smooth than a V-6. Might be a tough sell because of the NVH.

Hey man that would be awesome if all the hummers came in diesel. cus right now the the strait five and four's they put in the h3 is the reason I'm looking at toyota FJ's and Nissian xterra's. Imagine all that tourque on the trail. By the way (I live in cali so I dont know) has toyota ever made a diesel truck? I've Heard that people have diesels in their old FJ's but dont know if it's factory. Wait, a new fj with a 4.0 Turbodiesel would be nice wouldent it?

Why would we make fun of you?  I think every car, truck, SUV, and Van in America should have a diesel option.  Most do in Europe, and American driving habits are even more condusive to the benefits of diesel power than that of Europeans.  Diesels are 30% more fuel economical.  Diesels provide an advantage for city and highway driving; diesels provide a smaller price premium than hybrid technologies and can be applied to all utility levels, whereas hybrids are limited when it comes to heavy payload applications due to the weight of the batteries; diesels--new and old--can all use biodiesel and other alternative fuels with little or no engine modifications; modern diesels are very refined, quiet, extremely durable, and are rather simply designed; and modern diesels provide near equal horsepower with almost double the torque.  One other thing.  The alternative fuels designed to go in diesel engines all have superior energy content than alternatives for spark-ignition engines, and alternatives for spark-ignition engines require special design changes in order to use them.  For diesels, there are no necessary changes or modifications, and you get more BTUs in your fuel, and thus, better fuel economy.

For example, biodiesel contains nearly twice the energy content of ethanol, and even more than gasoline.  The net result, a flexible-fueled vehicle, running on E85, may lose 30% fuel economy in a vehicle that is already inefficient, but a diesel, running on biodiesel would lose no more than 12 percent--even if the fuel were 100% biodiesel, as biodiesel contains 88% of the energy of even the best petroleum-based diesel fuel.

So my choice is diesels for everything we drive.  Hayes Diversified Technologies has designed a diesel motorcycle for our military since these forces desire to go with only one fuel.  This motorcycle goes 100 mph; its a 600 cc, and gets around 100 mpg @ 55 mph.  And this is a real motorcycle, not a mini-bike or a moped.  Unfortunately, Hayes does not provide this vehicle to the public at this time due to the heavy military demand--as you can imagine.

Give me any of the full-size trucks with a conservative diesel engine.  Not a diesel to be the supreme power king of the configuration listings, but a diesel to replace the V6.  This gives the diesel the opportunity to provide adequate power for 1/2 ton chores; lots of torque; and fuel economy numbers that would shock everyone.

To go along with this though, we need to get back to reasonable wheel/tire sizes, curb weights, and vehicle stances with respect to half-ton pickups.  I have a 1989 F150 that weighs in at 4200 lbs, has 15" rims and 235 mm wide tires.  It sits up high enough, but I can reach the top rim of the body to place something in the bed.  With the new F150, for example, I would need a ladder.  My truck has 145 horsepower and 260 foot lbs of torque, and does everything a half-ton needs to do, but since it's 1980's technology, it gets about the same fuel economy as today's trucks.

So, if we could turn the pendelum on this "power craze" America is in to, we could make it on a 4.0, 6 cylinder, diesel in a half-ton that weighs around 4,000 lbs.  Three could still sit on a front, bench seat, we could haul around four by eight sheets between the fender wells, and we could get over 25 mpg.

Oh yeah!  I forgot!  That's not what Americans want.  We need 4 wheel drive so we can say we have 4 wheel drive; we couldn't tell our friends that our truck only has six cylinders; we've got to sit up there with the tractor trailers; and we've got to haul our 5,200 lb butts around, while going from 0-60 in less than eight seconds.  For a minute there, I got lost in my fantasies and forgot how important these necessities are to our ways of life.  If we had to go through life without being so terribly wasteful, I think it might kill us.

A5Jetta,

I'm totally with you on "rational" diesels. But let's face it, they're not as "sexy" as 10-second quarter, smoke-belching,  1,000+ lb./ft. monsters.

Supposedly some pretty nice half-ton and passenger-car diesels are going to be coming out. For me, the magic formula would be 40+ mpg and 8-second flat 0-60. Whoever's first out with that will probably get my business.

I am willing to pay $10,000 to get a TDI swapped into my 1987 VW Vanagon, as soon as I can save up that much, anyway.

My craziest dream is to someday drop a V10 TDI into a rare Vanagon pickup (which I would have to import from Canada). I have to wonder if I could make it as powerful as the fastest American-built drag pickups (and if the chassis could handle it!), but it would make for a fun project, at least.

Heck no won't make fun.  a magazine put out by a different group reviewed the isuzu that shares arcitecture with colorado/canyon.  The truck got a bland so-so review.  What caught my eye was how they said it would be a great truck with the 4 cyl diesel available outside the US.  I think it'd make for a great combo.
