We had lots of those 2 stroke detroit diesels in logging equipment. They were known as the "screamers". I have also seen diesels that are supercharged and turbocharged, once the diesel hits a certain RPM the supercharger would cutout and the twin turbos would takeover.

Hey what do ya think of my avatar is that not the most stupid thing you've ever seen! I guess it would make a great hunting rig for me and the guys!

The number of valves the truck has may effect the sound, but in my opinion they don't do *** for power. I never understood why dodge advertised their "24" valve cummins. Big deal. The powerstrokes have something like 36 valves.

Dude, you've never heard of a pony motor before. A lot of older tractors have them, well not a lot, but a few. Yeah they're pretty much junk in my opinion cause the gas engine is only used to "jump start" the diesel engine. Its just another engine that you have to maintain on the piece of machinery. Mostly John Deere used them but they got away from them. JD finally harnessed enough compression to start the engines to do away with the pony motors.

first off more valves does mean more power. proof is in fords 5.4L v8. before it only had 2 valves then they upgraded it to 3 vlaves per cylinder basically it went from like 260 hp to 300 hp. more valves means air will get moved through the engine faster

"The powerstrokes have something like 36 valves". 6.0 powerstrokes have 8 cylinders at 4 valves per 8x4=32. Cummins has 6 cylinders at 4 valves per 6x4=24. Pretty simple don't ya think!

yep pretty simple. i know they even have some cars with like 5 or 6 valves per cylinder. i wonder how they cram them in there like that imagine what the camshaft looks like

lol... is it just me or is the 99 cummins crap. i rode in one last night and it had no balls at all. well i mean it wasent bad but i have seen way better stock runners from ford in 99. it was a 5 speed manual with 110000 miles on it. it was alright but it was not god either. you know what i mean. the only thing i liked about it was how quite it was in the cab. the motor sounded good (way better then the 1999 ford motors) it was an awesome pickup just dident have the power i thought it would. i was going to buy it for 12500 if it had more power then what it did.     pickup was very nice but i just wanted some good power. if the dodges are that bad i prly wont end up buying one.

All trucks are diffrent.  No two are alike.  I was a big powerstroke fan and all i drove at work was a F-550 Power Stroke tire truck.  I loved it.  Then i went shoping for trucks and i test drove many 99-03 Power Strokes and i wasnt impressed much.  I test drove the truck i have now and it was obviuos the Cummins was the way to go.  Just my .02!

the 99 cummins is going to have like 235 hp i think and 460 lb ft of torque. you are just used to the "hot rod" diesels from ford and chevy. the 99 engine is a decent reliable engine that wont win any races but it makes an excellent farm truck

98.5-02 ISB are pretty much all the same. 5spd 235hp 6spd 245hp. Watch out for the 99-00 "code 53" engine block. I said the same thing the first time I drove my 02. I thought the power was blah. It had dead pedal. It did nothing at WOT but would go faster when you backed it off. After the mods it pulls like a freight train all the way through the pedal. There are tons of 800hp Cummins out there so don't worry about how it runs stock just buy one and go nuts on the after market parts. 800hp is 800hp so if 571hp is making you smile 800hp is going to make you pooh! Go for it!
