Will an AFE Direct Fit OE Pro-Guard 7 Air Filter stand up in the Duramax or will it inhale it like the K&N problem of failures and major damages some say they had happen on other engines also??? AFE Ads claim they can stand up to the diesel intake that is 7 times higher requirement of air compared to gassers...Thanks!!!

I have an 06 Duramax with the AFE element in the stock air box and had trouble immediatly. The filter is too heavily oiled from the factory and tripped the mass airflow sensor several times. The fix was to pull the filter and clean it, then re-oil properly. No problems since... Now I've seen the Banks Ram Air kit on the "Trucks" TV show and thinking of changing to that !! Check it out online at Spike TV... It looks pretty cool, the inlet is a scoop under the front bumper... Descreet !!

Is anyone having problems with the trans and coolant temps on their truck?  I have an '05 chevy 2500 duramax, and pull a 36' 5th wheel toy box.  I have seen my trans temp over 250 and my coolant at 240.  Is this a common problem / concern with the Duramax / Allison combo for anyone else?

Hell ya...  Somebody (TxC) has a web site and products just for the LLY overheating issue.

Check out www.coolmydmax.com.

BTW, the coolant gauge is off.  You were probably at 250* for real.

I have an '04 duramax with a Volant cool air intake with the AFE filter on it. It runs perfectly. I don't know how the AFE would work with the stock air box, but why would you wanna keep the stock box anyway? A cool air intake will pay for itself eventually with the savings you will get in fuel economy, not to mention the fact that you add horsepower and torque with an intake, which helps no matter what you are doing.

My MPG is already equal to or superior to many I talk with running the stock box and filter. I am not changing the setpoints on motor or tranny from stock they are just fine for my needs as is from factory. I just want the reuseable AFE so I don't have to buy the paper replacements and get better filtration protection with the AFE. The stock box works for me. If I wanted a better puller I'd get the GM 4500 or F 650 and put a C-12 CAT twin turbo MOTO in it and blow the little boys in the weeds as 1 tons look like TOJOS next the bigger haulers.

I PULL A 36 FOOT TOYHAULER ALSO, MY TRANS TEMP NEVER OVER 200. I INSTALLED DEEP PAN WHICH HOLDS 3.25 MORE QUARTS NOW TRANS RUNS 180.

I have the same truck and also pull a 36ft Raptor and have no problems with the trans or coolant temp.  If the coolant temp hits 210 the fans kick on and keep it from climbing.  I have taken my hauler on a 5 hour pull to Mammoth and had no problems.  Do you pull the trailer often?  I did have a trans temp problem but took the truck down and had the trans oil and gaskets changed and have never had a problem since.  I have just learned to change the oil more frequently than normal depending on how often I pull a heavy load.

Just saw some funny stuff here about intakes.  Reading the dyno testing on the aftermarket intakes in Diesel Power proves that they're a waste of money and don't give any more power than if you'd have a hamster tied up to the front of our trucks.  Reading this Air filter testing, the truth.... made me take out my three K&Ns and start using the stockers again.

I KNOW we all love to improve our rides but I think $300 in diesel will push a truck a lot further down the road than a filter that's letting engine killin' dirt in!

I have a similar truck (3500 SWR) and pull a similar trailer. I have had no over heating issues. I have heard that trucks with a custom grill have had troubles with overheating. Do you by chance have a custom grill? Some of the nicest looking grills cut the airflow substantially.

How many of you are having trouble with the steering shaft making a rattle/vibration? I had only 10k miles on truck when it started. Neighbor of mine had his fixed twice at dealer then happened again when warranty ran out. Seems like a weak design. What's it take before a recall? Mine is an 05 and my friends is an 03. He stated that it is a common problem with trucks comming to his shop.

Mine was kind of a knock almost, like something was loose almost and it almost only did it when i was turing. I dont know exactly what it is but mine was some kind of bearing in the stearing that needs grease. Crazy huh? My truck and my moms tahoe did it now its good.

GM will not recall the steering shaft because it isn't a safety issue, only noisy. They are supposed to be coming out with a redesigned one from what I've been told. I have been riding my GM parts guys for a couple months though and no word yet on release.
