Hey all... i'm new here, but have been a subscriber to Diesel Power for about a year now... i'm looking into a 6.5 to swap into my (currently) gas powered chevy G30 van... i've also got an '87 Suburban 3/4 ton 4x4 frame that i'm going to put under my van - free lift and 4 wheel drive... what should i look for in a 6.5 (i've heard about them cooking themselves), and about what do they run...?

The 6.5 is pretty cheap to pick up a re manufactured block with all the parts will run you under 5k if you can pull a used motor ive seen them for under 2k. The older 6.5 had some cooling issues but i dont think the newers ones do 95 and up but that can be corrected with larger coolers and water less coolant i think if we are even talking about the same cooking. Dont expect a ton of power out of these motors they wernt built for high hp, torq can probably be pushed up to 500 lbs mybe more? But they do run forever and get decent gas mileage. and are easy to swap into things.
