Could not have said it better! I keep reading on this site about these killer Power Strokes that beat everyone, but yet in real life I have yet to see one at a Diesel National event.

well some people are new to the whole  diesel scene and are ignorant. haha don't get all worked up over someone making a comment like that, what is gonna happen is they are gonna find out the hard way at a stop light one day who can make real power, and i don't think that a properly built powerstroke is a bad engine, but most guys don't go for the "whole picture" type of thing, mostly they just modify it till it breaks, i think it is just mainly brought down by a few inferior parts...

The 7.3's aren't bad engines.  I've never met a 6.0 I liked.  I haven't played with a 6.4 yet.  I really hope I don't have to.

I don't get worked up, I just state it how I see it.  Someone wants to say something that ignorant, I'm going to call them on it.

So far, there are MANY Cummins engines over 1000hp.  There are even Common Rail engines over 1000hp.  There is one Duramax, Nasty Girl that is over 1000hp.  To my knowlege, there is also one 7.3PSD.  He pulls with in the DHRA Circut.  Strong running truck, but I'm sure he's got WAY more $ in that truck than it would take to build 3 Cummins.  Nasty Girl is the same way.  BIG MONEY into that truck.

Not that there are Cummins engines that don't have HUGE money into them, but really it's not near as much. After some nice discussions with Patty and Van Haisley, it's interesting to know what has and hasn't been done....what is assumed and what isn't on some of the competitive trucks out there.

I'll just say, It's air and fuel ladies and gentlemen.  In a Cummins Pulling Truck, balance the bottom end.  Stock Crank and Rods.  Pistons of your choice.  There are a few Cams to choose from, choose the right profile.  Get some Serious pump work done (p7100), add air (turbo of your choice), set the air charge system to handle it, and enjoy.  That's the basics.  I will tell you, for a fact, that neither Curt or Van Haisleys pulling trucks has ported/polished heads on them.

customtruk:
dont agree my 06-6.0 ,with banks upgrades outran my buddys cummins with identical upgrades but Ill admit he had me at the start but in the end the ford wound up on top by 2 truks.

dzrtram:
That proves absolutely NOTHING.  When you start modifying a a truck engine it's hit and miss with which mod works best with which engine, and how the driver performs.

Cummins beats PowerJokes and Duramesses all the time in different types of competition, but even that doesn't prove anything, except that one owner did a better job of modding his engine.

The only relative measure of an engine, asuming all are relative close in other ways, is durability, and there the Cummins wins hands down.  Ask almost anyone. Why do you think you can buy a 650 Ford or larger with a Cummins engine in it? Check it out.

Don't forget, the Cummins is a medium duty engine. It has been "detuned" to meet smog standards.

BTW, my cousin in Canada told me a couple of months ago that they are already having trouble in Canada with the Duramess. An aluminum engine?  What won't they think of next?  If any place needs a Cummings it's the logging roads in Canada.

That's funny, because almost all the forestry trucks here in canada are fords. The cummins may hold up but the dodges won't! Ford is the truck of choice when you need tough and reliable. I see fords in all industry fleets. Even on local streets the fords dominate. Dwell on whatever you think you know about fords. Or that a friends buddy's sister's boyfriends ford died once stories. Denial is the case here. Everyone takes shots at number one.

Well cummins is gonna be the king on the pulling track. Thanks to a handful that started with cummins inlines so the rules fit what those guys came up with. NTPA listed diesel trucks this year i noticed its limited to 460 cubes so the ford guys got nailed to the wall otherwise they could bolt 466 IH inlines in and mop the Cummins up no prob. I think the Street/Work truck type classes will be a bit more even as to brands. Give it time guys with the V8s the 12/24v 5.9 is getting older every day and thats what all the tuff running cummins are

Haven't seen the pics yet. I'll have to look it up..

The choices of all the new diesels is Kewl...As for the V8 Cummins choice, I'm not a V8 fan. I'll stick with my I6. They just sound better, have more torque, and major reliability..

At 50000 miles I put injectors in my pickup, just 3 under warranty.  And at 52000 miles a new engine was put in.  Injector stuck open and burned hole in valve and melted piston.  2005 dodge cummins 2500 with no mods yet.

I'll tell ya what. The day I got my '96 Cummins, I asked the mechanic at the dealership if he had done a full service on the truck. He said he had. Me, being a little naive at the time took his word for it. I was in a hurry to hit the road, I had a rodeo to get to. So I pulled out, hooked up and left. The truck had 180,000 miles on it when I bought it. I drove nearly 400 miles from Kentucky to central Illinois, and my oil pressure light came on. I pulled it over and took a look. The IDIOT mechanic did the service, but failed to put OIL BACK INTO THE ENGINE!! There was hardly any on the dipstick. I checked everywhere for leaks, refilled, and moved on. After the refill, it ran fine, and has continued to with not a lot more than regular maintanence. I dont know ANY engine that could run like that. I know it is hard to beleive, but it is true. Now the truck has 234,000 miles on it, and I cant wait to get home to do some mods on it. That's my story...I'd go with the ol 12 v Cummins!!

stx450: FYI- the IH DT466 won't fit under the hood of a Ford. Nor any other stock pick-up on the market. The engine is too tall, too wide, too heavy. I know- I work in the blasted things every day. Plus, the DT466 doesnt produce numbers like the cummins does. It also is too limited in it's RPM range. 2600 RPM max if you want to keep in from scatering. But they are super durable. We have one that ran for 3 weeks with a busted crankshaft.

The reason you see so many Fords in fleets has less to do with "tough" and "reliable" and more to do with cost.  Ford trucks are cheaper when compared to comparable Chevy and Dodge counterparts.  And, as we all know, cheaper=better when it comes to companies buying 20+ vehicles at a time.

Ford trucks are fine, their diesels are not.  Personally, I wouldn't feel comfortable purchasing a 6.4 or 6.0L from a company that has to change diesel designs every few years.

And as for people talking about "high end" torque being better on a Powerstroke - who cares?  Really?  If high-end torque got loads moving - and kept them moving best - why would Cummins and GM both produce diesels that had peak torque between 1400-1500 rpm's?

Not being biased here, I'd say go with a Cummins or Duramax for the simple reason Ford hasn't been able to produce a reliable diesel truck since 2002 - when the old 7.3 went out the window.

If you want to be a guinea pig with the 6.4, go right ahead.  And anybody that recommends a 6.0 needs to visit a local Ford dealer and talk to the diesel tech - ask them about blown headgaskets and problems with high EGT's.
