calkins06: Hey im looking at getting a diesel but i cant decide what to get a powerstroke or a cummins???? Ive been around powerstrokes but the cummins is a great motor can you guys help me out? i plan on keeping it for a good while!!
You can never go wrong with a Cummins. I don't know why Ford has been so protected by the media with that Powerstroke. People have so much trouble with it that they are suing Ford, and Ford is suing International, who says it isn't their fault because Ford did some things to the engine that International told them not to do. Now Ford says they will build their own diesel engine.
I was waiting for my wife one day and I hear this sound that was like marbles rolling around in a cement mixer. A Powerjoke pulled into a parking space next to mine. He must have not had much to do because he came out a few minutes later, before my wife, and started up "Ol Rattler" and pulled out. Sure enough, there was a puddle of oil underneath the engine area where he parked. I know for a fact that it was not there earlier because I looked at the parking space when I pulled in.
For some darned reason Ford has been getting away with this, and some of the magazines pick Ford as the best of the bunch, and they have to know that engine is unreliable.
An incident happened involving a PowerChoke recently. A boy had a serious medical problem so they put him in a friends PowerJoke and headed for a hospital. On the way, the Ford broke down--stopped cold, and the boy died in the truck
Your question should be, "Why don't the magazines and sites like this tell us about the problem with the Powerstroke"? Then you wouldn't have had to ask this question, which I'm glad you did anyway. Of course, we know we don't read about it because the automobile companies butter the media's bread. Unfair world, isn't it?

customtruk: dont agree my 06-6.0 ,with banks upgrades outran my buddys cummins with identical upgrades but Ill admit he had me at the start but in the end the ford wound up on top by 2 truks.
That proves absolutely NOTHING. When you start modifying a a truck engine it's hit and miss with which mod works best with which engine, and how the driver performs.
Cummins beats PowerJokes and Duramesses all the time in different types of competition, but even that doesn't prove anything, except that one owner did a better job of modding his engine.
The only relative measure of an engine, asuming all are relative close in other ways, is durability, and there the Cummins wins hands down. Ask almost anyone. Why do you think you can buy a 650 Ford or larger with a Cummins engine in it? Check it out.
Don't forget, the Cummins is a medium duty engine. It has been "detuned" to meet smog standards.
BTW, my cousin in Canada told me a couple of months ago that they are already having trouble in Canada with the Duramess. An aluminum engine? What won't they think of next? If any place needs a Cummings it's the logging roads in Canada.

oil leak? thats not an oil leak, thats just sweat dripping from all that horsepower. Ha ha ha yeah i wish our 5.9 engines had the same specs from the factory as the ones in the diesel pushers. i would love driving around with 700 factory torque

I have a 2000 7.3L powerstroke with a chip, exhaust, and intake. Its a great truck. I just hit 315,000 miles with it. The problem with buying a Cummin is that the truck wont last the life of the engine. I know I had one. Also the 6.0 is not a bad engine. So what it had a few problems at the beggining...in 2003, that was five years ago. I just ordered a 6.4L. It should arrive in 2-3 weeks. How can you say dont buy it because it is too new. After ford had problems with the 6.0 the first year, you can bet they've tested the crap out of this engine. Also there will be aftermarket parts for it, go to superchips.com

If you want a heavy duty truck that will last, get a ford. If you want to race down the dragstrip, get a Cummins. If you blow it up, it is easier to work on. As for dzrtram's stories about the media covering up for ford, I wonder if thats why all the construction companies and fleets buy ford. Because they listen to the media. No!! Its because they are great trucks. Like I said I have 315,000 miles on my 7.3L. Oh yeah I was wondering how many others like dzrtram check the parking space next to him before a truck parks next to him. dzrtram is full of hot air.

You have 315,000 on a 7.3 which is a great motor. As far as 6.0 goes, not so much, just goggle it. You'll have hours of jaw droping reading from ALL of the 6.0 years. Did you read Mercury 8's post? I'll never knock a Ford truck for toughness. I've had three Ford diesels a 6.9 and two 7.3s and they were great trucks, never let me down once, but there was no way I was going for a 6.0...period! Put a 6.7 Cummins in a F-350 super duty and I'll order one the next day.

What? The truck wont last, there are plenty of Cummins on the road with that amount of milage and more, I have never had any promblems with my Dodges and neither has anybody in my family, that's why we keep buying them and the 6.0 had a little more than a few problems, 77 engine service bulletins to be exact since it's release( thats why Ford is suing), the Cummins common rial has had none, the D-max has 8 or something and it's more than just 03 6.0 and I woudn't bet they tested the crap out of the 6.4 because they have already been recalled for the flame-thrower kit.

if you are looking for the highedt milleage trucks the cummins powerd rams are where its at. i subscribe to TDR as well and they have a section for badges awarded to high milleage and there were five or six that were getiing the 500k milleage badge and one that even ticked over 800k, and that was just for one quarter out of four issues a year. I don't ever recall of hearing of a powerstroke f series getting that high.

the reason you dont see any dodge ram ambulances or any other type of utilty truck for that fact, is dodge hasn't offered a cab and chasis truck for probably more than 10 years. and even then they didn't offer a 4500 or 5500 only the one ton 3500. but dont be surprissed if you see lots of cummins powered trucks taking the place of superduties now that they have the 4500 and 5500 cab and chasis out now offered w/ factory exauhst brake. and now that sterling trucks is going to have a 4500 and 5500 cab and chasis truck out based on the dodge ram, in a lil while you will definitly see lots of cummins utility trucks.
