What would you guys rather own, a BMW M3, or the upcoming 335d turbodiesel with 425 lb./ft. of torque, and chip-tuning capability for a whole lot more?

Yeah. I don't think it would take much to get the 335d to 325 hp and 500 lb./ft. That would be one fun ride, there!

i'll take that diesel any day and leave that M3 in a thick cloud of black smoke! just think of the possibility of a lightwieht diesel vehicle with an engine that will probably have the potential to make decent power and high reving on top of that!

Yeah the 335d is probably going to run $50k+. At the very least, mid-to-high 40s.

Modding BMWs is SERIOUS business. Luxury and performance car builders like BMW charge you boatloads of money for their cars, and then they charge you even more for broken things in their cars. What sucks even more is that many of the parts in BMWs are intricate and expensive to fabricate, so if anything goes wrong the likelihood of a DIY fix is pretty low, so you're pretty much forced to pay stealerships a fortune just to fix a tiny problem.

If I had the money...I'd probably stay with the M3. At least I can pay 70k and safely have a factory warranty to back me up. Spending 50k and maybe another 10-20k for a modified 335d would make an awesome car, but I'd live in fear every moment I'm driving it because I know any problems will cost another fortune to repair. And it's not like BMWs are the toughest cars built on the planet too, heh.

It's not Cheap to Mod a BMW, but already there are re-maps for 335d in EU up to 350 Hp.
There are a lot of Chip tuner out there now, most of the systems are connected "piggy back" style with wiring harness which you can uninstall with ease. Plus most dealers can't detact the addon system since most of them do not change the OE setings on the BMW ECU.
I'm sure you can also match a set of larger turbo to get more serious  power, plus de-CAT and used much larger (or better flow) exhaust system should get you 400Hp may be more?

My 90 Hp VW TDI Golf now has 130WHp and 227 Ft-lb (stock at the flywheel =90 Hp and 150 ft-lb) with just minor chip tuning, large nozzles, and 3" exhaust(w virtual exhaust - another 3" opening at the downpipe when my turbo at full boost!) also minus the CAT; kept the muffler, because wife can't stand the noise.Plus a large front mount intercooler /w stock turbo.
But my suspension cost me over $10K. I upgraded to 12" wilwood brakes on the front, added 20AE rear disc brake system, Hochkis front and rear adjustable swaybars, front lowered spindles and lower control arms with spherical bushings and camber adjuster at the top of the strut. (there are no rubber bushings in the front suspension, they are all metal to metal; pretty stiff, but my Honda S2000 STOCK syspension still felt much stiffer!
But this Front wheel drive TDI Golf rides like a rear wheel drive cars power out of the corner!(with oversteer!)
And I'm still geting over 40 mpg running a WVO! (Stock engine was getting over 53 MPG!)
The only issue I have right now is the transmission grearing ratio is not matching the mods I had put in (even though I swapped out the 5th grear with a taller gear)
I think I might have to go with the 6 speed tranny on this one?

I know there are poeple with larger turbos getting over 200Hp and 300ft-lb of torgue out of these 1.9L TDI engines!

I would go with the 335d for my every day car(saving money right now for next year!), and my next choice will be the BMW 135i and do some mods on it will easily over passed the M3 (even the new V8 M3! unmodified, of course) get an used one with mods probably only spent under $45K.

The M3 has a very high rev motor (similar to my Honda S2000 @ 9100 rpm! Honda has a fuel cutoff switch at 9300 rpm to save the motor, but if you down shift two or three gears at high Rev, you WILL damage your Honda motor! I think M3 redline somewhere around 8500 rpm? But I heard that some time the electronic Rev limiter doesn't work and lot of people damage the motor by over Rev the M3 motor)
Both M3 and S2000 are fun cars at the race track when you keep your engine revved high (I usually shfit at around 7000 RPM in my S2000 on the track, but I couldn't do that often on the street!)
Plus with these Low Rev Diesel engine is why they last much longer than the high Rev gas eninges. Plus the Diesel engine are build much tugher and higher tolerance s for the extreme high compression.

Both VW TDi and the 335d have the low end torgue to handle that stop and go (red light) traffic with ease.

I drove the new 2009 stock 335d, they are awsome! A little bit turbo lag when you punch the gas paddle, but it pick up very quickly and will push you back to your seat like a V8!
The dual clutch auto shifts much faster than the manual cars. I just wish I had the paddle shifter which was not on the test drive car (it is an option item)
I liked the stock handling (On the 335d they still kept 51/49 weight ration, just 191 lb heavier than the 335i gas cousin), may be some performace suspension later. Not sure if wife will like it?

BTW, currently BMW has the $4500 ECO Diesel Discount, and the $900 Diesel Fuel discount, Plus At the end of the year Sale Tax discount from the government.
Base (stripped) 335d is around $45K, it can be under $40K with all the discounts (I missed the Cash for clunker deal, which could add another $3500- $4500 off)
But with sales tax and the aftermarket Mods, will set you back agian to $45k-$50K.

Oh, BTW, you can't realy "smoke" the M3, because there isn't any Black Soot coming out of the tail pipes at all! You can't even smell Diesel (or any smell of burned fuel) from the tail pipes! I stuck my nose right to the end of tiail pipe and can't smell anything! Plus this car is SO QUIET, it felt weird.
