my dad has a 2005 Volkswagen passat tdi with the 1.9 liter turbodiesel engine. he was driving down the highway when the car told him he had no oil pressure.took it to volkswagen and they said he needed a new engine. 10 grand plus new parts.after 2 weeks of drama over warranty stuff the dealer found out the turbo had exploded and hit the oil pump whih then failed to work which made his engine brake. now it has new internals and head but the same block. before this episode every month something was wrong with it. Oil leak, new belts, new turbo. i was just wondering if any of you guys have had the same problem. its a great car that gets 40 mpg but it has many problems

I haven't had a TDI, but I had a gasser VW with some problems. My father-in-law is also an import mechanic and works on a lot of late-model VWs, and he thinks the 1.8Ts are total turds when it comes to reliability. So did he have to pay out-of-pocket, or did VW end up covering it under warranty?

They did pay for it but it took two weeks for them to get  a inspector to look at it to see if it was oil starved like it hadn't been to any oil changes.they did not even look at the warranty to see if it was covered. we had to do that. lets just say i will never bring in a car or truck to volkswagen for repair they just tryed to screw us over to many times.

Yeah, my father-in-law gets a lot of customers that are fed up with dealing with the dealership. I'm glad that when I bought my VW, they were offering the 10yr/100k mi powertrain warranty. I took full advantage of it! But yeah, in my experience, VW dealer service departments are generally very arrogant and typically try to blame the customer for any problems.

I really want to like the new '09 Jetta TDI wagon, but based on my previous experiences with VW, and horror stories like this, it makes me a little hesitant.

I just had the same problem. It happened last Sunday on a 2005 Passat Wagon TDI with 171,000 km! I was driving down the highway and the oil pressure indicator warning came on with the message to STOP. I had it towed to the dealer and I found out the tension guide which holds the the fuel pump chain in place had failed. There were two pieces of metal in the bottom of the oil pan. The car has been regularly serviced by VW dealers. This strikes me as metal fatigue. Your message will help me in dealing with VW.

Thanks for posting.

If you look at www.tdiclub.com there are some folks who are engineering a fix on this and documenting evidence for this situation. Search the name oilhammer. Right now if you do your timing belt at 100k, you should plan on replacing the oil pump shaft, the oil pump chain and the tensionor at the least.  You may have to replace the entire balance shaft module which of course costs $1300 for the part alone. If you have had this issue, please register and go to the B5 forum to register your failure. Members from www.tdiclub.com has informed VW of the regular failing of this part of an otherwise decent car.  Those of you who have this car must make sure that you use a VW certified 505.01 or VW certified 507.00 motor oil.  I own one of these cars and I do regular oil analysis and I personally do oil changes every 8k instead of the 10k that the factory suggests.

Its been discovered that there are some upgraded parts for the BHW motor for the 2.0 Litre VW diesel engine's oil pump chain assembly in which the chain is replaced with a gear setup. Read the following links which should at least get you information.  The first set of parts are arriving from Germany to Oilhammer in the months ahead.  According to Oilhammer, the parts list looks like parts that will make the repair a much more permanent fix.

Below's link discusses the specific parts numbers of the retrofit:

Below's link shows pix of the unit and if you go all the way to the end there is now one converted BHW motor in the usa working well.

So if you hear any strong pulsing marbles in a blender noise, stop driving the car and get it fixed.
