if it was me i would go with the 12 valve p-pumped they produce great power potential and also are extreamly easy to put in because of the lack of electronics and then you could slap a nv4500 or nv5600 behind it and get decent milage out of the setup

realisticly with the confined space of the dakota i would just put an auto in it. its so light that if you just upgrade the VB and convertor on it you'll be fine unless you go with HUGE HP numbers. but for just something that will put out good power thats all you'll need. Also about the motor. go with whatever. painless wiring makes a kit to plug and play with a common rail. its just all about the money at that point. good luck with what ever you decide and keep us informed.

The automatic weights about the same as the manual with maybe 100 lbs difference max which doesnt make that big of a differnece its all personal preference it would prolly be easyer to install a manual if it is already a manual truck and a auto if its already a automatic

sorry for the confusion on wording. i didnt meant the weight of the trans. i meant the truck is so lite that you wouldnt really have to worry about the trans to much with as lite as the truck is. if you just to a basic convertor and VB upgrade you'll be fine. you wouldnt have to worry about billit input and output and what not.

oh yea i get what your saying... makes sense but forsure you will need to upgrade the axles to handle the extra low end torque and hp of the cummins

Yeah, I'd say you're probably going to have to put in a whole new drivetrain: trans, driveshaft, axle, etc. But believe me, it'll be money well-spent. The Cummins, especially if you juiced it a little, would obliterate a stock Dakota drivetrain.

esanchez is right, the cummins will snap that pinoin shaft in two in about 2 seconds.
