larryboy_3t5:
I have had more problems with my new 6.4L than I can count.  Anyone else out there having issues?  Ford is now denying my warranty because of my AFE intake.  Any help out there?

HEY LARRY, THAT'S BS, FORD CAN'T DENY YOUR WARRANTY OVER THE INTAKE!!!!!! YOUR GOING TO HAVE TO MAKE SOME PHONE CALLS TO FORD HEADQUATERS, I ALMOST BOUGHT A NEW FORD, I'M GOING TO HAVE TO BUY A TRUCK WITH NO DPF!!!

That's a bummer. I've heard of dealers being leery about aftermarket parts, but I'm talking programmers and other stuff. But just a freakin' intake? Geez.

Pretty far off some of the mag. articles I've been reading. But its a great truck, lot's of Jam.

I bought my 08 f-350 king ranch in feb, stock I did honestly see 16 mpg, however I did have to baby it quite a bit to see this number, a more realistic figure was around the 14 mpg mark.

After adding a 6 inch lift and 37's mpg went downhill really fast, I was seeing consistant 8's, chipped it and I am around the 12.5 mark but sometimes I have seen it in the 13 range. It is a personal truck only, woman driven daily, so the concern over fuel isnt all that great, if I drove long distance's or used it as a worl truck I would be bitchen my head off, besides it is worth sucky gas milage to see the looks on boys faces when a woman gets out of it LOL

Count yourselves lucky you didnt buy the 450, my hubby bought one and is now trading it in, a little over 1100.00 to drive it 1400 miles, sure it was towing a trailer but the king ranch can pull the amount it did and worse yet our 2000 dually with a jillion miles could of pulled the load as well and not spent any where near the gas that hog did !

I am a first time diesel owner and I am whimpering really hard.  I bought my 2008 F-250 with the 6.4 four months ago.  I was driving a 2007 Titan V-8. Loved that truck but I was going to start hauling a 32 foot cargo trailer at about 6700 pounds and thought the Ford would haul it better.  When I drive like a 90 year old woman with a brokent right foot I get 12-13mpg in town and 15-16mpg on the freeway.  Just towed trailer to Nevada and got 7.5mpg going up and 9.3mpg coming back.  I am very disappointed.  Reading the other posts on this forum I am not very excited about what I am reading.  The warning in the Ford manual is really explicit about after market changes.  Are there safe chips that will help the mileage without blowing things up?  Would absolutely appreciate a response.

This is strange... I get 19-21 mpg  hand calc unloaded regularly with my Cummins and I would expect the Fords to be on par.  My dad has an old Ford 7.3 with like 300k miles and it gets about 18 mpg. If anything, the smaller displacement and the more efficient and modern injection system (like I have in my cummins) should yield better mileage.  I would get it checked by the dealer.  Maybe you are driving really fast.  If I go over 70 my mpg goes down the tubes.  If I floor it all the time and drive over 80, I get about 15-16mpg.

carls the 6.4s are gas hogs no matter how ya drive some are lucky and have gotten 20 mpg out of them but others have just gotten low teens. plus these new engines have so much emmission crap its not funny, the 6.4 uses more fuel to burn off the soot during re-gen i heard

elktaker, that's too bad. That's really poor mileage, even towing. To be honest, any of the new diesels with DPFs don't get the same mileage as the older non-DPF models, but even so, it seems like the Dodge and Chevy do a little better. If mileage is a big consideration, I'd consider trading for something else.

The mileage on the 6.4L SUCK bad !! I get 10.2 when I pull a 6x12 Trailer and 10.6 without it. I havd had all the ford  diesels and this motor is bad. I have had this truck for a year (15000 miles) and there is no improvement.I talked to a ford service manger and he said there is no safe after market things to improve the fuel mileage. He stated any modificatios will VOID your warranty.

Thanks
Jeff

DPF = Diesel Particulate Filter. All the '08 and newer trucks have 'em from the factory. You can hack them off, but it'll void your warranty.

UPDATE on 6.4 4X2 Crew Cab 3.73 gear - Pulled a 28 ft enclosed trailer about 900 miles.  7,000 lbs plus trailer.  Running 67mph got 10mpg on flat ground and 8 in the hills. Running empty got 10 @ 65 mph.... bumped the speed to 75mph and got 11.6 empty. Without trailer around town the mpg average is 12.5 to 14.1 on the Lie-O-Meter.  Actual check of mileage indicates about .5 to .8 mpg less.  Feather foot driving on take offs produce the best city driving results.  I can average 18 on ALL interstate driving (Lie-O-Meter).  Regen cycle happens more often after 20K miles.  Have just under 25K on it now.  Still love the truck. We are in the infantcy of diesel polution controls. It will get better with newer models.  Took manufacturer's years to get better power from polution control choked vehicles in the 70's. Now the issue is MPG. Lots of people (that knew how) removed the catalytic converters and put in a "test pipe" back then.  Removing it was illegal then and is certainly illegal now.  Didn't stop them then and probably won't now.  States that don't have inspections are the most likely to get mods of this sort. For the record ... my bone stock old '97 F-250 7.3 (given to my son) is still stock.  My 6.4 has until 36k before the DPF and stock exhaust go in the shed and a 4" turbo-back exhaust goes into place with a tuner to stop the regen cycles and compensate for the breathing change.  At 22k per year, it just takes a while to get there.

Had a 7.3 got a 6.4 wish I had a 7.3 again!
