in replacing belt i can line up the cam and the fuel pump but the crankshaft v belt pulley doesnt have a notch to line up with the intermediate shaft pulley like it says in the idiots guide?

Don't know off the top of my head. But my father-in-law works on VWs, and he says you can't always go by what the repair manuals say. Especially when it comes to VW timing belts. He said he did one a while back on a 1.8T Passat to the factory specs, and it ran like crap, but then he advanced it a notch on the belt, and it ran great.
