The car was surprisingly quick, it did have a small bit of turbo lag, but we can live with it. With the hood up after a sprited drive you could hear some rattle in the engine (not really a big deal).

We really wish VW would have put this engine in the passat. The salesmen was telling us that we can't be picky on the color and options??? And that he isn't sure if there going to sell it at MSRP or above. Is VW only making a few of these cars? We would like to get a sportwagon. Is there any word on other automakers and the MPG numbers out yet. We would just hate to buy the VW because its the only car out right now.

I say if you're looking for a diesel sportwagon, the market is extemely small.  The other oems will probably try a diesel in sedan configuration first, and see how they sell.  Right now I would say the VW is your only option.

That's cool. Yeah, I've heard some of the VW dealers are being jerks right now because they're assuming they have a captive market for all the TDI groupies. Personally, I'm in no hurry to buy. Most likely, it'll probably be November-December '09 when I'll be in the market. I'd imagine at that point, I'd have my pick of the lot.

I'm guessing I will weight also, I just can't see myself pay over MSRP for anything.

I think by '10 or '11, there may be some other lower-cost diesel options other than VW. Specifically Subaru and Honda. Possibly Mitsubishi. Personally, I've had a lot better experience with Japanese cars as compared to German cars when it comes to reliability.
