Spotted ape is right. The D-max was designed within the past couple of years, knowing of the up coming 07 emissoins standards. The 5.9 (correct me if i'm wrong) was designed in the early to mid 80's. If I were to fall in a bucket of money, I still wouldn't buy an 07 anything!

You're right about the 5.9 being around for awhile, but how many times has it been changed since the begining????? Wasn't it the late 90's to early 00's when they went to 24 valve for emissions? You are right however on not wanting an 07' or newer though. To much emission crap to go wrong and to much ***

The only major changes to the 5.9 over the years were the fuel systems, and the 24v cylinder head in '98 1/2. not sure if it was for emissions, (no new standards at the time) or upping the horsepower. if a guy were to buy a new truck, best to wait for a year, two or three, until all of the new engine bugs get worked out.

I'll second that statement. We'll see in another year who's the best and what went wrong.

all three diesels have been decent the last five years.the 6.0 had its problems, but so did the duramax at first.and the pre 03 5.9's [24v] had terrible inj.&lift pumps.my opinion of the best of anything is how long it lasts and how close to "performing like it's new" while it lasts.the 5.9 is definitely that motor.it can take more abuse than any other diesel ever put in a light duty pickup.whether its stock or tuned up.there are 5.9's sled pulling with 250k miles on them.and i understand that they might not win every sled pull or drag race, but they win one or the other more than not.if the 6.7 turns out to be as good as the 5.9 was then cummins and dodge will still be the diesel pickup of choice.barring a cat powered truck.

Not sure where all the bad info is coming from. I currently own an F350 crewcab, longbox, dually. Absolutely no problems and puts 4 big black lines on the pavement about 100ft long from a dead stop and runs mid 14's w/very minor mods. Also owned 2 7.3's and loved them also. note: best friends Dmax can't keep up and he's looking at an F350....sorry

6wheelstanley I'm wondering which bad info you are talking about? Also you can say my truck can beat this or that, fact is that it depends on what has been to each truck and who is driving. If you get to MN sometime look me up and we'll see how fast you are against a D-MAX. By the way 14 seconds means you ain't stock!! Have a good X-Mas.

For the record though. I think the Fords seem faster stock than both GM or Dodge.

with more displacement and six holes the cummins will continue to spool slowly.........with the 6.0 under their belt who would want to be their guinea pig at todays prices? not even a fair comparison ,lets bring a knife to a gun fight! its a no brainer! DMAX RULES

for a lot of you guys Cummins is releasing a new 6.7 engine in dodge trucks and i'm reading something like a lot of you are scared of the change... this summer I had the chance to run a 6.7 Cummins in a 2007 PC200LC8 excavator;if this engine is good enough for a worlwide industrial manufacturer like KOMATSU i think it's the best choice for trucks engine. Just think about the common rail equiped 5.9 engine;Rated at 300HP in a snow blower, reving 2650rpm all the day long(a true work day-18hours!!!)burnig something like a hundred gallons of fuel!!! well............. CUMMINS RULES for DODGE TRUCKS others is just pick-ups

If REAL TRUCKS DONT HAVE SPARK PLUGS then I think cummins should take it to the next level and say REAL DIESELS DONT HAVE GLOW PLUGS!
