My 6.2 diesel keeps tearing, chewing and snapping old type V belts

Can anyone give me some answers, we have checked the alignment and cleaned the pulleys but still doing it.

The 6.2 buildup has a wide flat belt.
Is there an easy retrofit i can do by changing the pulleys on the alternator and crank?

Thanks

Chris from the UK
(its really difficult to find good advice over the other side opf the pond)

Chris, check out http://www.62-65-dieselpage.com. That site has a lot of good info and resources on GM diesels, and I'm sure there are guys that have done a flat or serpentine belt conversion on the 6.2s. You might even be able to use a accessory drive off the newer 6.5 engines on there. Hope this helps.

Dear Esanchez
thanks very much for that I have emailed them, I cant find anything in the publications etc.
Can you explain (in detail as I am a bit slow) what you mean when you say the accessory drive from the 6.5?
Thanks very much

Chris

At the front of the engine, you have the alternator, A/C compressor, water pump, etc. On older engines, there are 2-3 different belts driving them all, some of them the V-type belts you describe. Most newer engines have a single, flat, ribbed "serpentine" belt that drives all of them.

The 6.5 engine is closely related to the earlier 6.2, but with some significant changes. Especially the later ones that are turbocharged. However, there were some normally-aspirated 6.5 liter diesels offered in the full-size vans in the U.S. and some other commercial applciations. That would probably be your best bet to do a serpentine belt conversion.

I did find this thread on another diesel forum that might shed some light on your issue. Hope this helps.
