OK, I guess I, or rather you, are little confused. In the article I referred everyone to, ALL the 3/4 tons are gassers, including the F-250 which was running the 6.8L V-10. And seeing as this is "Diesel Power", the 3/4-ton gasser competition doesn't matter here. Although I'll admit the Dodge "Hemi" and it's automatic are a joke to tow heavy with. I know. I had one. With a torque peak of 4400 RPMs it's more of a sports car engine than a tow rig engine. Maybe things will be different if and when Dodge releases the truck version of the 6.1L SRT Hemi.
As far as the Dodge's gearing in the 1-ton diesel category, a win is a win. All manufacturers were informed of what their trucks were going to be tested for, with towing performance being the major factor. It is common knowledge that 4.10:1 axle gearing makes for better heavy towing performance than a 3.73:1 ratio. The F-350 has an available 4.30:1 gearing option, yet they chose not to use it in the testing. The Dodge guys knew what they were up against and they played their ace. The Chevy HD is also available with 4.10's, but in this comparison, the Chevy's lighter weight and higher rated power numbers were enough to keep it ahead of the rest for most of the competition. Would I have liked to have seen the Cummins Dodge come in 1st more often? Sure! But I'm not gonna sit here and make excuses why it didn't.
The F-350 is a great truck. They all are. Doesn't matter if it has a Bow-Tie, Blue Oval or Ram's Head in the grille. But they all have their downsides and for most new 6.4L owners it's a lack of fuel mileage. The man asked what kind of fuel mileage the new Ford 6.4L PowerStrokes were getting, and for a majority of the owners (not all of them) out there, not that great. Unfortunately for them, 12mpg is a lot more common than 18mpg. And unfortunately for all of us, the days of bone stock NEW diesel trucks getting 20+ mpg are all but over. Killed by the 2007 EPA emissions laws. Mods like tonneau covers, intakes, exhaust systems, electric fans and such will definitely help, but that's a lot of money to spend for a vehicle to get the kind of fuel economy it should without help.
But there may be hope for the 6.4L guys getting crappy fuel mileage. Back in 2004.5, when the Cummins "600" was brought out to replace the "H.O.", it was saddled with a bunch of new emissions baggage on the engine and new emissions programming in the PCM. It made more power than it's predecessor, but got crap for fuel mileage. Dodge and Cummins engineers were able to re-work the programming in the PCMs to where the truck would still be 50-state emissions legal, and able to get the respectable fuel mileage diesel engines are/were known for. This may be the same issue with the new PowerStroke. More like emissions teething pains rather than a real problem. Give it time.

Well the Ford and Chevy had 3.73 gear ratio vs. a 4.10 so of course the Dodge is gonna have better, and i am talking about the F-250's not the 350

Well i must say the 3.73 is very lacking compared to my 4.10 gears in the 08F350 SRW i tow well over 10.5k all day long, in fact im towing an excavator about 17.5k it definatley hauls ass with the load rides super smooth. I am gonna kiss that all good bye though soon i just ordered my lift kit today, its going to be ten inches with 38s... So who cares how fast your getting to 55mph when you look damn good doing it. Anyone got an 08 Super duty lifted???

I read an article in a magazine article...in the December DP (I think) and an 08 F-350 owner wrote he was getting 19 flat in his and the only mod/adjustment was he raised the PSI in his tires to max.

Our shop 2008 F350 single wheel will only get 9mpg around town. The best it has had on the highway was 11.5mpg. This truck is a pig. Nice to drive really quiet, just hard to afford the fuel. Our exhaust brake makes it really nice to tow with, now we just need some fuel economy to go with it.

I don't know how many new ford's I have owned and driven as company p/u's also, but, almost all ford power strokes. 15 of those years were in logging industry, so they were put to the test, not only off road, tons of highway miles, extremely heavy loads, etc, no complaints! You ask how could it have no power? It has power, BUT, there is a 2 second delay. I have had two near accidents from trying to accelerate in traffic, and there is nothing. It is bizarre and frustrating! Fuel mileage? Horrible!!! The best I have got is 13.5 on interstate at 65 mph, over that and it goes down to 12 - 13. Keep in mind I only have 7,000 miles on it. I post this for two reasons: 1) To answer your question about the power (it's there, just after a delay), 2) To see if I can get some advise on what to do with this thing, short of selling it.... I have never did any chips, mods, etc: never had the need. I'm being pleasant about my comments here, in reference to the 08 6.4L Power Stroke. I would HIGHLY caution anyone before buying this truck. I have F-350 Crew, tall rear end. I have actually contacted Corporate Ford in regards to this truck, never done anything of the kind. Can anyone advise me if a chip, modification, etc, to this motor may help? Thank you.

I agree. I think dieseldude03 has some good points in one of his lengthy posts below. I'm just curious to Dodge and Chevy onners, what are you getting for mileage (08's)? I now work in the Heavy Civil Field as an estimator, so I know exactly how much fuel gets burned in a fleet (350 pieces) of equipment, trucks, and P/U's, and am still trying to digest this 6.4L performance. Anyhow, more than frustrating after so many good years of good performance. They kill mileage and power with emissions, now they say were running out of crude oil.... Seems it is a bit out of wack at times. In a perfect world there would be a balance, but, I don't think that is in the near future, if ever.
