For those who don't understand boxer engines very well, I think it's important to mention that boxer engines are unique in that it can provide a stability and balance that normal V piston configurations can't offer. The difference is that rather than a V configuration, each pair of pistons simultaneously move in and out, and this is the source of the stability.
If this becomes a big hit, what this means is that it's very possible we're going to have a new generation of performance diesel cars with a strong emphasis on handling and control. Perhaps it could remove the stigma that some associate with diesels being only able to go fast in a strait line.

How is the boxer different from an inline? How is the inline different from a V?

It's the cylinder arrangement. Think of a "boxer" engine as basically a "V" engine with the cylinders 180 degrees apart. So a boxer four-cylinder has two cylinders on each side. It also gives such engines a unique exhaust note. Subarus and old VWs sound very different from conventional four-cylinders, and likewise, Porsche flat-sixes sound different from BMWs (straight-sixes) or Nissans (V6s).
