I'm loking for fuel efficiency in the engine choice
but as I am a college student i have the time, will and strong back to go junkyard scrounging before i have the money to buy something.

Do you think its even worth it

A few things to consider: Do you have emissions testing where you live? If not, you should be OK. Otherwise, you're opening yourself up to a lot of headaches down the road.

Also, chances are you're probably going to have to do a lot of other modifications to put a diesel in. Are you thinking of a Cummins 4BT or something like that? Or importing a JDM Isuzu diesel out of a similar model sold overseas? Either way, you're probably going to run into a lot of issues you didn't expect.

The easiest (though not the cheapest) way to do a swap is have the entire donor vehicle with you during the swap.

In terms of it being "worth it," that's a highly subjective judgment. Most rational people would say "no" but enthusiasts aren't always rational.

If you want to be the only guy in town with a vehicle like that, then sure, it's worth it. But if you think you're going to regret spending $5-10,000 on something that only a few other people might want to buy, and are OK with never completely re-couping the money you put into it, then go for it.
