esanchez:
Hi all! We've been waiting a long time to get the official figures, and the EPA now as them posted for selected '09 models on its website. Here are the figures for the 2009 Jetta TDI:

6-speed manual: 30 city/41 highway
DSG: 29 city/40 highway

While good, I guess I'm a little disappointed after all the advanced publicity I heard promising 50-60 miles per gallon. But to put things in perspective, the ratings on the previous 1.9 TDI which was significantly less powerful, was 30/38.

What do you guys think?

Wrong, Wrong, Wrong, on, on, on, which is no spelled backwards 3 times!
I have a 2004 VW Golf GL, 5 spd, 1.9L with 100hp engine with Plenty-of-Power!. I'm the 1st owner, of this vehicle. It has almost 83,000 miles since I got it in March 2004. I get average 45-50mpg, all day long, on country roads, with very little Hwy driving. My drive to work is 26 miles one way. I drive mostly in & around, 12-14 miles south of the Raleigh/Cary, NC area. Work in Cary NC, a special place for those that live in Cary NC, who can't read the speed limit signs, which is the law!
I'm a Retired Marine, with 27 yrs in the Corps, these are the facts, all the above is true!
Steppen-out @ 120 steps per minute! Which is called quick time! MOS's: (0151, Admin Clerk), (Career Planner X 2),
(Drill Instructor 1979-1981 MCRD San Diego), (Mech in Marine Corps avaition working on F-4's & Harriers aircaft, 1976-2000 at different times).
Semper FI, Marines!

So you're saying you think the new TDIs will surpass the window sticker figures?

I'm pretty sure it'll have a good chance passing sticker figure. The EPA always had their issues and bias to start, because they never adjust their tests for different types of cars. This is what happened with the Prius fiasco, since hardly anyone driving under normal conditions were able to get the old 50+ mpg rating. Once people called this issue they finally lowered the ratings to the mid 40ish.

VW, I hear what you're saying, but consider the new 2.0 TDI has about triple the power of your model, and gets close to the same mileage.

I'm not bagging on your truck, but I'm just saying you need to put things in perspective a little.

Granted, overall fuel economy hasn't gone up that much over the past 10-20 years. But if you look at power ratings, they've gone up quite a bit. So basically, they've held the line on fuel economy, while responding to Americans' demands for "more power, more power!" with each succeeding generation. It seems like there's beginning to be more of an emphasis on fuel economy again, so you might see the horsepower race slow down a little, but the fact of the matter, is there's still going to be demand for power, regardless of fuel prices. The challenge to the engineers is to produce that power without a big fuel economy penalty.

I just bought a '09 Jetta TDI with the DSG trans (6spd auto) and have averaged over 40mpg city.  It has not been taken on the highway yet and only has about 200 miles on the OD.  I would say that the published mpg figures are very conservative.  I expect to see very close to 50mpg if not higher on extended highway trips at 65 or 70 mph.
