I am a cummins man my self but think that the power strokes are the best sounding diesel in production, but the old 6.2 chevy wasn't bad either. (Cummins needs to work on their sound)

In a pickup, a twin-stacked 12-valve Cummins Dodge. Best diesel sound ever? The old turbo/supercharged 2-stroke Detroits, straight-piped of course!
2003 Dodge Ram 2500 Laramie 4x4. H.O. Cummins, 6spd manual trans, 4.10 gearing. Intake, Exhaust, Hot Juice, HTT HTB2 62/12/65, Jake Brake, 305-65R17 (33 x 12.50) Pro-Comp Extreme All Terrains, SBC Con O FE, Fuel Tank Vent Mod, Various other gizmos.
I-6 Cummins guys are keepin' it straight. Those other boys swing both ways.

How about a 3-71 Detriot in an Oliver tractor (99, Super 99, 990, 995) or the 4-53 in the 1900/1950 tractors? There's one on Youtube that the guy took off the blower and put a turbo on it... sweet sound.

Yeah, those old 2-cycle Detroits probably had the most unique sound.
Not that they're especially good-sounding, but growing up, it seems like everyone around me had Mercedes 300 SDs and 300 Ds. To this day, I can't get the sound of that 5-cylinder diesel out of my head!

Two engines gave me my love for Diesels, CAT 400 in a PeterBuilt; and the old International Harvester TURBO, like Wolrd Champion Puller Albert Long had back in the 1970's and 80's !!! The pullin tractor had a bit of a whistle when he left the line but at a 100 feet it was nothing but the roar of pure power !!! The old PeterBuilts we close to the same when they where nearing the top of a hill or about a 100feet through a green light, there was nothing but power coming out those straight stacks !!! Also my Dad had an old 80's 7.3 with glass-pack mufflers that was really cool sounding. I;m building a Cummins for my pickup with doubled turbos and straight stacks I hope it sounds like I plan for it to !
With GOD all things are possible!

I think the old 7.3's sounded pretty good even though i am a chevy man. the chevy 6.6 is to quiet even though it is a powerful motor the old 6.2 and 6.5 sounded better than the new 6.6. but in the end i am still a chevy man for life

I'd say a 6.2 diesel with dual glasspacks and 3 inch mandrel bent pipes.
My dad picked up a Silverado that needed a serious overhaul, so it got a complete engine rebuild, a 400 turbo tranny with a shift kit (we blew up the 700R4 after the engine rebuild), and replaced the exhaust with dual 3 inch pipes and glasspacks.
It sounded like a motor boat until you got on it, and then it would really roar.
