dont get me wrong i love my 7.3 powerstroke but recently been thinking what would the diesel world be like if ford went with a cat motor instead of the powerstroke?

Maybe after the 7.3 they should have. Before the focus on emissions and mileage, International built great engines for ford. The 7.3 in the 99-03 ford superduty trucks is a hoss. I wouldnt trade my cummins for it but thats my personal opinion, i cant deny that they are tough. Ive heard that the later years of the 6.0 weren't bad, but that was the begining of the end of thier decent motors, as CAT option would be interesting wouldnt it, i wonder how many cummins fans would convert if it was an inline CAT. I wouldnt but i imagine that there would be more than a few. I heard a rumor one time that ford explored the idea but when they wtalked to CAT, the engine was so overpriced that a base model truck would be too expensive to compete with dodge and GM. Not sure how much truth there is to that but CAT is like John Deere, great machinery but you're gonna pay a little extra for that special color...

It's pretty much a moot point, since I think CAT recently announced it's not going to make over-the-road diesel engines anymore because of emissions compliance. We'll have to wait and see how Ford does with the new "Scorpion" engine.

i wish cats could pass emissions maybe then we would have a solid 09 motor
yes ford should have gone cat sure it wouldn't be a c 18 or a 3406 but cats make big torque and we would have programers for cats then

Don't get me wrong, I love both my Dodges ..... but the idea of John Deere green or screaming Caterpillar yellow under the hood of a truck ..... ANY truck for that matter ..... definately brings a smile to my face.

Maybe someone can set me straight. I was under the impression that Cat did build some smaller diesels for Ford called the Lion, and that when they debut there F150 diesel option in 2010 or 2011 its going to be one of those Lion motors.

ummmm why bother with a Cat or a John Deere? Seriously there are more companies out there that make engines just as good if not better! I get sick of hearing people talk about this. Mostly it's by people who have no experience with either one. They just KNOW that EVERYBODY likes them and so they should like them too! Or its  the same idiots who buy the same brand of whatever just because thats what they've had and their daddy had and...

Neither Cat or John Deere's engines are made for a pickup application. Sure they have lots of torque but they are also heavy with lower HP numbers. and that is the main reason why Ford will never use one. They cater to the "well this truck has more Hp than the other truck so therefore it's better!" crowd.

So with that in mind they would both have to either redesign their current engines or design new ones. and NOTHING says that they will be good engines. Both John Deere and Cat have had their share of rotten engines too.

Well, if Dodge goes the way of the Dodo, Ford might be offering a Cummins as an option. Who knows?

I will tell you what would be even better! In the F650 models you can choose your engine! Cummins,Cat,or Powerstroke. That would be nice if they could just make production cradles that they could drop in and make them a preorder option like you used to do with the Harley Davidson. Can I a get a 2nd?

A cat in anything would be nice but I agree, partly, with Kazairl that the world has a whole bunch of great light diesels that could work. Benz, Volvo, Detroit etc... But have you ever heard a Cat run, woody!

scratch the cat idea. how about an inline detroit. i used to drive milk trucks, and the detroit 60 series we had in the freight shakers would murder c15 or 3406 motors in the petes. no comparison. by the way wut happened to the blowin smoke gang? i have been absent for awhile.
