Can the silencer ring be removed without removing exhaust manifold? What year did they start using these rings? Thanks
Nevermind, duh, I read "Related links" and they pretty much explained everything. Sounds like a 20 min. job.
just for future readers. the turbo silencer ring is located inside the holset turbo on all year cummins motors. the silencer ring is located just inside the turbo and is held in by a snap ring. remove the intake tube. use two screw drivers to pull the snap ring out. use one to lift the silencer ring up and the second to pop off the ring. easy job. just be careful not to puncture the compressor wheel.

From what I've read, removing the silencer ring doesn't add any more power, but just makes the turbo a lot louder. Anyone had any before/after experiences?
i removed my silencer ring in my hx35 and had no power gains just a lot louder then with the ring.

By removing the silencer ring will it hurt you turbo or anything?
You can damage your turbo if youre not careful when removing the ring. However, if you're patient and follow the instructions for removal then its not a problem.And you won't cause any damage by having it removed, it just makes more turbo noise ..... which is a good thing.Kris

Thanks man. So is the ring pretty noticable because I pulled the intake tube off and didn't see a snap ring or anything. I saw the wheel but thats about it.
i have a 1992 dodge cummins and i didnt notice a silencer ring?? didge the 1st gen hv them??
1992 dodge W350 4X4 5spd 12 valve 226000 miels, 5in stacks, custom fuel pin, smoke screw truned all the way in, star wheel truned all the way, 3200 gov spring, 18cm2 turbo. 29psi of boost. boost and pyro gauges. K&N air filter
to me it is not a bunch louder but it is a little louder.i say this so people dont think you are going to here huge screams coming out.now if you can get a hold of a scottys air breather now you will add even more inside the cab.cuz of the hole cut behind the glove box.

I have silencer ring out of my 1996 Cummins and it I get A LOT more turbo whine out of it. Then again, I do have nothing but 3.5" pipe from the turbo back
i have 4in downpipe into 5in into 7in stacks behind my head.maybe thats why its not much louder to me?
