Okay, I know I'm opening up a can of worms on this one, but I want to ask the question...Do diesels have to make a lot of smoke to be cool? Is a diesel that runs a 12 second quarter, smoking all the way down the track cooler than one that runs a 10 second quarter and barely smokes at all? Why is smoke cool?
On the flip side, if you're a fan of "smokeless" diesels, why are they cool? What would you do to start convincing the Bubbas that diesels don't have to smoke like a train to be cool?

well iguess if you got the money to waste on the extra fuel plus fixing everything that will bust or melt from the high egt's then go for it. then when the gov't starts to regulate all the emissions everywhere then the smokers need to stop their crying cuz they will be the ones to ruin it for all of us
I burn more diesel and run more miles in a week the most of you people do in a month. ctds that have been used 97 3500, 98.5 3500, 98.5 3500,01 3500, 03 3500. those that are being used 06 3500, 07 3500. and yea these trucks earn their living

I like breathing good air as much as everybody else but the question is should a diesel smoke yes and no. diesels are going to smoke even at stock levels its not going to be so thick it blots out the sun though in some cases it may be a light haze. no a street driven truck should not blow smoke like a compitetion sled puller smoke is wasted fuel and wasted power. some smoke is ok but a lot will get you in trouble if you live on the west coast you know what im talking about. would i like a 10 second truck that smokes a little hell yeah who wouldnt. im not a tree hugger just so you know im an enthusiast like everyone else a big 4x4 smoking a sportscar is awesome in my book.

A little smoke is going to happen .... it's a diesel. However, I don't know why you'd smoke out the race track as hard as some of these guys do.
I'm not a tree hugger, but I run diesels because I can't see why a 2500 shortbed is maybe getting 10 - 12 MPG with gas when a diesel will almost DOUBLE that.

I agree with the other posts on this,my truck does not smoke unless i make it smoke. NO SMOKE MEANS A TRUCK IS RUNNING AT IT'S BEST.!!!
starting a forum on smoke is not what Diesel Power should be doing, smoke is WASTED FUEL.!!!!!!!

Wow! Good answers guys! Nothing for me to argue here!! It's obvious you are all much wiser than 90% of the diesel population!

You guys are all correct. The Dumb @@@@@ that think you need to have black smoke are just little teenage kids that think it is cool to smoke out the rest of the street. Little do they know that it is harming there engine injectors and turbos. But I guess if they need to waist fuel to be cool then they have the money Or there parents ***
The only time black smoke is cool is before turbo spool and climbing a steep hill shows a little power is there..
Smoking all the time is stupid stuipid stupid!!!!!!

Yeah, I don't think any rational person objects to a little puff here and there. Heck, when you floor a gas car, sometimes they'll smoke a little.
Like you guys said, thick, nasty smoke is just wasted fuel, high EGTs and lost power. Maybe they're cool for tractor pulls, but not for your daily driver.

Tractor pulls are the exception, totally.
Or if you're running an old 5.7 Olds or an early 6.2L ..... then you're gonna smoke like California in fire season.

Some smoke is, of course, unavoidable... That's just the nature of the beast...
But all of these children trying to FORCE their POS's to smoke horribly... That's different.

here is my opion.
if all u want is smoke, then get the hell off the road. now if u want to get power, then u will have smoke. weither it is just till the turbo/turbos are spooled, or a high hp sled puller blacking out the sky all the way down the track.
for racing u dont need all the smoke, u need proper sized turbos to make, and once they are spooled, should barely have a haze.
for sled pulling, the more fuel u are pouring to it, the more pulling power u will end up getting. not nessasarily hp but torque. sled pullers r limited to singal turbos in most all cases and the pulling classes r usualy determined by the size of turbo.
