Hi, I'm new to here, and maybe you'll think I'm a lil crazy for wanting a diesel caprice, but, it's the only 1 of two gas vehicles I ever owned (just don't care for non oil burners) Will a 6.5T or 6.2 work?, I'm not looking for fast acceleration or high speed, or the expense of a Duramax, or are there other diesel that might wort out, possibly a Detroit 4-53T, or 6v53T?, car has a 4L60E (basically a 700R4 w/ more computer control) 4sp auto, with only 2.73 rear end gearing so I'm guessing that will help some with the lower redline of the diesel. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I realy want to have something different, oh alot of my concerns are adaptability to the transmission, etc... Thanks again

Hi,
New here also, but I was curious about doing the same thing but I was leaning toward the Caprice Wagon.  Here's what little I do know: The bellhousing pattern on the 6.2 and 6.5 are the same as the SBCs (not sure where a 94 fits in but I think it's the regular SBC patern- the LS1 series is almost the same, it just moves one bolt)  So your transmission would bolt up, but you'd rather have the correct diesel trans (lower stall converter and correct shift points).  The diesel 700R4's of that era didn't even use a computer in some applications from what I hear (check this).  The motor mouts are the same also.  The diesels will weigh one or two hundred pounds more than the SBC you probably have now.  I think the 6.5 is around 650 lbs and SBC's range from around 500 to 600 lbs depending on heads and intake- yours is probably fairly light.  No idea if the exhaust manifolds would get along with your engine bay or not.  I think it sounds like a great idea if you already have the car, especially with that gearing.  If the 80's Suburbans and pickups got 25MPG with the 6.2L, you should get significantly better in a sleek Caprice!   All the other DetroitDiesel motors are supposed to be very heavy and then you have issues with transmissions as well.  Do it and let us know how it turns out!
