Just wondering if 10,000 miles might be a little to much for a new engine before an oil change.... I have 8500 and am considering changing it myself. Should I be concerned? Also what kind do I use? Mike

Well, 10k is the VW factory-recommended service intervals for all their cars. Personally, I think it's a little long. I've heard the VW factory filters are very good, and that's why they recommend the long service interval. If you're going to DIY, I'd recommend using the factory filters. The newest grade of motor oil for diesel engines is CJ-4, so I'd think as long as you're running that grade, you should be OK.
I found this PDF of a VW TSB that lists all the approved oils up through the '08 model year, but I don't see anything for the '09s. Hope this helps.

Wait till 10k miles and only use an approved VW 507 oil, they are low ash for the DPF.

I used to have an '85 Porsche 944 and the interval for oil changes was 15,000 miles ..... this was per the book.
Did I ever let it go that long? Heck no!!!! I cut it in half and changed the oil every 8,000 miles. Surprisingly it didn't look like used oil but I don't like taking chances.

If you've already gone 8500 miles, I'd probably just wait 'til 10k to do the change at this point.
