What is the safe horsepower limits for 2002 7.3L?

Let me first say that I am a diesel novice at best. I own a diesel (1991 Ford 7.3L) and I frequently read dieselpower magazine. I do know some from working at a tractor dealership for 12 years but nothing to help me here. My uncle (who passed away) owned a 2002 Ford 7.3L with the 6-speed manual transmission. I am planning on buying this truck and my question is how much power can I safely add before I need to start doing internal engine work and are there any weak spots I might need to address first before doing any power upgrades? I am planning on towing with this truck and maybe doing some playing at the track.

If you plan on having a motor that lives, you need some GOOD custom tuning. And I'm not talking about DP Tuner. Since the truck is a 2002, it has PMR's (Powdered Metal Rods). They are much more prone to breaking.

I'd say to keep it under 350. As a matter of fact. I don't even reccomend adding injectors to a PMR truck. Just get good custom tunes. They should give you around 315hp max. After that, I wouldn't go any farther until I had a spare short block or you swapped your rods.

Those RODS are weaker than the older ones, If your planning on major HP I would change the RODS, BUT only if you would go over 400 hosepower.

Ummm... that's what I said?? The 01-03 rods are PMR's. 00 and under are forged.

Thanks for the advice guys. I really like this truck and would like to keep in the family for years to come. Just out of curiosity, how much horsepower can be gained on a 6.0 powerstorke before it needs to be beefed up? I like Ford trucks(always have) and would one day like to build something to give the Dodges and Chevys around here a run for their money.

Well... I can tell you. The 6.0's aren't really safe at stock levels. They're prone to pressurize the coolant and stretch the headbolts. But after you do headstuds and egr delete, they can get pretty powerful.

I'd say 700+ horsepower easily once you get the right turbo, injector combo.

Thanks SLEEPER. That would definetly give alot of the truck around here a run for their money.  When I do build a truck I want to make sure I build it right. The 7.3L I am buying is to replace the old 7.3idi and for sentimental purposes. I do plan on towing with it but nothing the Powerstroke can't handle. But in the near future I plan on buying another Powerstroke to build up to whip some Cummins and Duramaxs. I am just not sure which Powerstroke engine I want to use yet. I figured I save that question for another post later. Once again, thanks for the help.

Well, if money wasnt an issue, I would buy a 6.4 that is out of warranty, and do a DPF delete. You can get 5 to 600 hp easily with just an intake, exhaust, and tuner. And it will be pretty reliable hp.

Don't get me started on DP Tuner.

SLEEPER is right !!!! Get a 6.4 with a SPARTAN TUNER(275 HP) & DPF/CAT DELETES and you will be doing 13.2  1/4 MILE on the factory stock tranny !!!!

Until you tear up a few injectors and it hydrolocks... I am currently repairing an 08 6.4 that had catastrophic HPP failure. 5 injectors hung open due to high pressure pump debris and intermittently hydrolocked the motor. The result ended in 5 bent rods. These motors are built with such tight tolerances that the slightest bend in a rod can cause counterwieght to piston contact. Someone should engineer a filter for the High pressure fuel between the pump and the heads to prevent this. could be a much safer way to jack these pumps up a bit better without the risk of losing half the high pressure system...

Sorry, know that was off topic.

you guys were talking bout the dpf delete? what is that an do you mean. I have a 99 250 but it is one of those ones made before march of 99 so it is the early one i dont have to worry bout the rods being a issue  at 400 hp.

Dude... DPF delete is for a 6.4... You'll be fine a 400... but I don't think you'll get there easily any time soon.  What are you running??
