Funny you should mention the Mahindra .... I think we've got a diesel Tata out here on my base.  I'll see if I can look under the hood before I come home on leave.

Would you look at the hold down hooks on the side of the box.  My old Toyota had that same style and they worked awesome.  Nice to see some companys out there remember function over looks.

Yeah, those outside tie-down hooks are the best! I guess once people started complaining they didn't "look cool" that the OEs got rid of them. Shows you what 90% of trucks are used for nowadays.

Here's the new thing supposed to come out in 2010 or 2011: They spray urea into the exhaust, which along with the catalytic converter will reduce NOx levels to near zero which means that they can increase cylinder pressures with more timing, boost, and compression ratios to reduce soot which will lead to less regen cycles.

Back to the original topic, I think GM will be the first to completely disappear. By closing down dealerships, how do you expect to sell your product? Dodge got in bed with Fiat so I think they will make a comeback.

Yeah, the urea SCR systems will practically be mandatory across-the-board for diesels by 2011. I think Dodge is skating by one more year without it, but they're probably going to have to get on board eventually as well. The one advantange I have heard to this setup is it does give you a little better fuel economy than the current NOX catalysts.

what about the gov. and GM, how long before they take over everything its not like they even do their own jobs very well and whats Fiat going to do for Dodge besides buy them some time with more money but what happens when they go broke.  Its like nobody thinks past right now what about in a few years

Seriously, if Dodge/Cummins makes a urea injection system for the 6.7 then I'll buy it in a heartbeat ...... I can't wait to lose that damned DPF.

to all,

fwiw, i drive more miles (for my job) each year than most everyone here does in three & my choice year in/year out is '83-'85 Mercedes TD cars.

furthermore, our family owns at least FIVE (5) M-B diesels at any given time.= my brother has a M-B sedan with over 800K on the original engine/trans; NOTHING major has been replaced in that time, other than tires.

IF M-B sold a PU, i wouldn't be looking for a 12V Dodge 4x2 for the farm. period. end of story.

yours, PG

new2diesel;all,

121 HP (don't know the torque figure) for the 300 turbo (617) engine in the 300SD & 88 HP for the NON-turbo engine (in my 300D "Euro-spec" 4D sedan).
(240D engines, should anyone here be interested, are 67HP.)

all of our family's M-B diesels are "dead stock" & i've never attempted to increase the power of the cars.
(as tough as the 617 is, i shouldn't think that "hot-rodding" it would be a problem.)

YES, imVho, the 1985 M-B diesels are THE transportation bargain of this or any other year, if you want to have a car that you can drive for the rest of your life.
(at age 62YY, my 300's are IN my will.)

generally, you can find a NICE "one owner" 300D sedan or 300SD (my choice) for about $3ooo-4,5oo.
("project" 300's seem to be about 1,ooo-2,ooo.)

if you want a Safari (the 2D station wagon = VERY nice cars - i'm currently seeking a NICE Safari.) those are about 5K in the same condition.

the 300CD COUPE is 6-10K, if you can find one in excellent condition!
(personally i wouldn't buy a coupe, except as a "collector's item", as they have LITTLE room in the back seat & a smaller trunk.)

EXPECT (and budget for!) to immediately/soon do the following to EVERY used M-B:
1. repair the AC (the ones offered for sale all seem to either be leaking freon and/or have a DEAD compressor.),
2. adjust the valves,
3. replace the glow plugs,
4. replace the original radio (if the Becker radio/cassette is still in the car - SAVE that Becker for car SHOWS.- imVho,it's JUNK! - all our cars now have Sony sound systems.),
5. replace all the hoses & belts,
6. repair the electric windows & locks (if so equipped),
7. replace the shocks & tie-rod ends,
8. replace the exhaust system with STAINLESS steel from the engine to rear bumper (from a reputable company that offers a "lifetime guarantee on parts/labor"),
7. flush/change all the various fluids,
9. repair or replace the "load leveling system", if a Safari
AND
10. repair the electrical system, if anything is non-functional.

and finally, buy a copy of the HAINES repair manual & read it "cover to cover". - it's the best 18.oo you'll spend this year, if you are a M-B diesel NUT.

just my opinions.

yours, PG

Dodge will have the urea system on the cab&chasis 6.7 . The 2500 and 3500 dont have to use it. The ford 6.7 and duramx will both have urea and a smaller DPF.
