I'm a in the market for a used truck. I don't know much. I own a septic installation business and need a box truck capable of pulling a 20K trailer. I currently have a Ford cf8000 with 210hp ford 7.8 diesel, allison trans. I only drive about 10K per year. On to the question....... I'm looking for a year 2000 or so truck. I see the dt466 and dt466E. I assume the second is electronicly controlled. What are the advantages/disadvantages? I'm also looking at trucks with that CAT 3126. What do I need to be aware of with any of these motors? One more?.... How many miles do guys generally get out of auto transmissions in HD applications? Thanks!

The 7.8's aren't that bad, are you getting rid of it or adding to the fleet? Anything 2000 or newer would be electronic. For a med duty truck, the 466E comes in first in reliability. The 3126 is a ticking time bomb, yet some people have good luck with them. They have some problems with dropping valves, popping head gaskets, more injector issues than they should, and a few other little things like spitting out connecting rods. A guy from our Allison shop said they should go about 150k, and ous are utility rigs(IH 4900s and 7400s).
