OK, here's the deal. I for a very long time have wanted a diesel Jeep Wrangler. And I sat by and watched them put a VM Motori engine in the Liberty. That was OK, but we all knew it wouldn't last. I also saw them put the 3.0L V6 CRD in the Grand Cherokee and I had hope. Then I came across this article, http://www1.eere.energy.gov/vehiclesandfuels/pdfs/deer_2002/session8/2002_deer_stang.pdf Please open and read this article, it is from the 2002 DEER (Directions in Engine-Efficiency and Emissions Research) Conference. The whole argument for why we don't have more diesels in the U.S. for years has been "we won't be able to meet the stricter EPA requirements." Well in the article mentioned above from 2002 you will notice they had an engine that meets Tier 2 Bin 5 Emissions. That would be the same emissions controls that we are finally just seeing VW and Mercedes engines meet now. But in 2002 Cummins, an AMERICAN company, had an engine that met these tough standards. So the question I have is since Cummins had this engine in 2002, why is it I couldn't buy my 2009 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited with one of these engines?? Anyone??

SSHSHSHSSHHSSSHHHHHHHH!!!!!! Don't say that in public, an Executive at one of the American car manufacturers might hear you, and then they'll think it's true.

The cummins 4bt turbo'd meets the california air quaility this is an industrial engine also the cat 3054 4 cylinder turbo also meets these standards.
The fact of the matter is why use what is the waste of gasoline production (aka diesel) for better mileage when you can sell those vehicles with bad fuel economy and sell alot of them.

Since the engine in Europe is the 2.8L I4 CRD, I can only guess that it's the same VM Motori engine that was offered in the Liberty in 05 and 06. This was a good little engine, could have been better, and won't pass the current emission standards in the U.S. Also since it won't pass the current standard, it's no where near meeting the standard that goes into effect next year. I would love a 4cyl Diesel in my Jeep, the only manufacturer that is really trying to make a T2B5 4 Cyl Diesel for use in the U.S. that I know of is VW. And while I'm at asking, why is it that you can't seem to buy a Diesel with a Manual transmission in the U.S. (do they think we don't know how to drive a stick??)? I'm impossible, I know. I just hope that Fiat takes the diesel engine from the Panda and offers it in the Wrangler, get rid of all the extra crap like HSA and ESP, to simplify it a little. And we might have a great Wrangler, but let's face it they don't listen to me, I post this same stuff on the Chrysler blog all the time, and they don't care
P.S. Look at the link I put in the original post. In that, the specs they give are for a V6 and V8 Cummins Diesel, the V6 was tested in a Durango. Man what I'd give to get my hands on one of those
