A little help would be great.

I have recently bought a 1993 f350 with the not turbo to replace my 2008 dodge cummins.

I am looking at installing a aftermarket turbo and have found that the ats and the hypermax are the best canidates.  I would like some insite on which one is preffered for towing and performance?? The truck has 153k miles on it and runs like it was new.

I would also like to know what other mods i would need to do to make this truck the best all around towing truck?

Alos the person that i bought the truck from had installed aftermarket headers for a gas truck and glass pack exhaust  . would powerstoke manifolds work for this truck and the mods or would i need to find idi manifolds??

thanks in advance for your help.

Ford briefly made a 7.3 IDI turbodiesel. I would think most of the parts would bolt up to your engine.

i was told by one of my mechanics that adding a turbo to a high mileage motor that did not originally have one will cause problems due to the higher boost and compression. dont know if its true or not
I burn more diesel and run more miles in a week the most of you people do in a month. ctds that have been used 97 3500, 98.5 3500, 98.5 3500,01 3500, 03 3500. those that are being used 06 3500, 07 3500. and yea these trucks earn their living

I know most parts will bolt up!

I want to know which turbo is better hypermax pulse turbo (comes off both manifolds to turbo) OR ats waistgated turbo (comes off one mainifold and maintains a regulated pressure)

I don't want my truck to blow apart I want power for the hills..

I am replacing my 08 6.7 dodge that has 78k miles on it and has been to the entire western part of the USA all while towing 17000lb camper.  I need the ford to hold ut to long travels..

PLEASE HELP WITH ANY INPUT

Sorry for the delay but my IDI has been taking all my time. The August issue of Diesel Power will have an article about installing the ATS turbo system. It went on real easy and I like it.
Keep the original exhaust manifolds you will need them for  all three kits Banks, ATS, and Hypermax.  They are nice pieces. They look solid and unrestrictive.
Perhaps I could get the Banks and Hypermax systems and conduct "THE ULTIMATE IDI TURBO SHOOTOUT"
One thing I like about the ATS system is it is wastegated. The Banks is too. The Hypermax is not. I am sure each kit has its own pros and cons and it would take the person to try all three for themselves to check out the nuances. One thing is for sure any turbo is better than no turbo.
These kits only produce about 8-10 psi of boost since the compression ratios are so high. Good for low end torque and getting the load moving.  Cause once you get it moving its all down hill.

Putting a turbo on an OE non-turbo IDI you shouldn't go past 8 - 10 PSI.

I remember reading it somewhere, but for the life of me I can't place it.  I know it has to do with the higher compression ratio of the non-turbo version.  You could do some serious engine work (pistons, connecting arms, and crank) to lower the compression ratio, but it depends on how much work you want to do to get higher boost levels.

So it sounds like the ats wastegated turbo is better set up to be able to regulate the boost

Looking at the hypermax turbo it doesn't tell what the boost is but with out a waist gate I cannot see how it can be regulated..

If the engine ever goes then I will do the correct mods so it can handle 18 to 20 psi but untill then I just want to be able to tow.

thanks for the help

Your truck should hold up just fine by adding a turbo. Lots of guys have done this upgrade and put 300k on there trucks. Both ATS and hypermax are excellent turbos and as far as i have seen neither have a real advantage as far has power goes. I suggest adding a moose pump along with a turbo if your looking for power. I would check out oilburners.net those guys are an endless supply of knowledge on idi's.
