I'm looking to rig up a 1 ton for a welding truck, never owned a diesel, what should I look for when buying a used diesel?  How many miles is too many? I live in Calgary, most of my driving will be around the city.  Any suggestion on which truck? Not planning on towing, just have heavy load in box, thanks

Well, I probably wouldn't buy anything with over 150,000 miles on it. I don't know what that translates to in km, but you should be able to find plenty of options for that price. Also, if you're using it for a work truck, I'd try to find a truck that hasn't been excessively hacked-up with performance modifications. Some minor plug-ins or bolt-ons aren't a big deal, but chances are, if it's been majorly modified, it's been driven pretty hard. You don't want to inherit another guy's problems.

I would avoid the early 6.0 Ford Power Strokes. The 7.3s are generally pretty solid and make good work trucks. The first-gen (LB7) Duramaxes had some issues. The best one is the LBZ, which was offered in 2006 and 2007. Cummins are generally pretty solid, but there were a few years when they had some issues with the injection system on the 24 valves.

Finally, if you're going to be doing some heavy hauling, make sure the suspension is in good shape. At the very least, I'd invest in some new shocks, and inspect and replace suspension bushings, if needed. Hope this helps.

Amen esanchez Go for a Ford 7.3 powerstroke you'll never regret it. Cummins are just pretty much just for the mellow sound they make.
