i just bought an old but running good and strong 1985 6.2 diesel pick up for parts..it has a good 700r4 and all the stuff i think i will need for the swap...i want to put it in a 93 silverado 4x4 that currently has a 4.3gas with a 4L60E..it does not have a kickdown cable i'm told the older ones did...can i use the 4L60E tranny and leave the computer hooked up so it will run the speedo and such..i plan to run mechanical gauges but not speedo ...would i need to change the torque converter...i have one out of the 700r4...i really don't like the 700r4 tranny's i burnt a few of them up..someone told me 4L60E tranny won't work right with a 6.2 infront of it ..if u can follow all this please any help would be greatly appreciated..

Personally, I'd probably try to find a newer 6.5, but if a 6.2 is what you've got, then you probably want to use it. Yes, you will probably have some issues with the transmission compatability and running the gauges, etc. I have seen some "dummy" computers that run the gauges and other things, but the engine management is stand-alone. But I don't have a lot of experience or knowledge in the particular swap you're talking about. There are a lot of knowledgeable guys in this forum. I'm sure someone will be able to help you out.

i like the 6.2 . they sound pretty good if u put loud mufflers on them good for a lot of miles and most of all i have one haha..and they don't need a computer thats another thing i love about them...the power does leave something to be desired but oh well so don't a 4.3 and i'm getting about 3 mpg with that right now haha...thanks for our info exsanchez

a 4L60 is the newer version of a 700R and they are both junk...get a turbo 350 or 400. Either will bolt right up to the 6.2 as for the ECM you will have to wire the new truck with the wiring harness and dash from the donor truck some fab will be necessary to install the dash and as for the actual swap it would be best to remove the front clip to make it easier to work. That is all the assistance i can offer i hope it is helpful

You're actually going for a fairly simple swap. The speedo is the only question in my mind. The 6.2 is a stand alone unit requiring only a ignition switch activated hot wire to turn the fuel on in the injector pump to run and off to shut the motor off when you turn the key off. The 85 also had a cold weather circuit electrically operated by a temp sensor and a second circuit in the injector pump but I disregard them on mine in Montana and don't expect you need to worry about it either. The starter is one igntion switch activated wire to engage the solenoid while in the start position and the battery positive cable to the same place on the solenoid as it was on the 4.3. The 6.2 has a mechanical fuel supply pump in the same place as the traditional chevy v-8 engines while the 4.3 I believe used a electric pump. You can either use the 6.2 pump or switch over to an in the frame electric pump for a later model 6.5. You should consider using the converter for the 6.2 because the stall for a diesel is lower than for a gas engine and at this point I will defend a well built 700R4 or 4L60 if built by a reputable tranny man using the proper after market parts available today. If you consider using the 700R4, make sure the transmission mount holes and location are identical to the 4L60. When it comes to the temp and oil pressure senders it's simply a matter of adapting the 4.3 senders to the proper spots in the 6.2. The cable you talk about is called a tv cable was succeeded by electronics in the 4L60. I hope some part of this shotgun blast helps and someone with more expertice on 4L60s can fill in the blanks. I do know that the 4L60 was not built for a specific engine and doesn't know if it's being driven by a V-8 flathead or a four cylinder honda so there's got to be a way to make it work behind a 6.2.

thanks alot ron..i thought the same as u ..the 4l60e has the same bolt pattern as a small block chevy and the same as 6.2 diesel ..i've had better luck with them than the 700r4...i can rebuild engines in the dark but never messed with a tranny..i think i'll keep the 7004 arround and maybe rebuild it with a higher vain pump better servo and of course better sungear..the problem is i have to keep the tranny from the 4.3 as it is a 4wd and i just ain't messin with something that works right now..you've been very helpfull...i'll save the computer leave it hooked up to run the speed and the gauges..i will have to black tape the service engine soon light as it will think it doesn't have an engine...the truth is it never really had an engine it had a 4.3 gasser haha thanks again
