You want the hot-head answer or the REAL answer? For one thing, Mulally had the foresight to get financing before credit markets imploded, and mortgaged almost every asset the company had (including the blue oval logo) to secure credit lines. GM and Chrysler did not.
Ford also starting the downsizing process before GM and Chrysler did. There's been plenty of pain to go around Detroit with everyone, but Ford has felt it the least because of smart strategic planning.
In terms of the 6.0 and 6.4 Power Stroke, Ford has already cut ties with Navistar, and the next-generation 6.7L "Scorpion" diesel V8 is an in-house design, from what I've read about it. No more taking it in the chin for another company's poor design.

I don't know how "real" they are, but the numbers I've heard for the new Scorpion engine are 390 horse and 720 lb./ft. Sounds feasible for an engine of that size.

None of them would have problems if they had done better with their product lines years ago. The American made Japanese cars (Honda, Toyota, etc.) and the European lines (BMW, VW, Audi, etc.) have all put their money into getting better mileage from gasoline and reaching into the untapped diesel market.
Honda's Accord and Toyota's Camry all get better mileage AND hold their resale value more than GM, Ford, or Dodge cars ever could .... and now Audi is racing diesel cars (and winning with impressive results), BMW is marketing diesel on TV, and VW has a Golf hybrid diesel that is supposed to get 70 MPG.
On top of that throw in the failed HHR from Chevy, the PT Cruiser from Chrysler, and all three of them having no innovation. I'll be the first to admin I like the retro cars, but when they get mileage that's close to what their namesakes were getting I'd rather have a '66 Fastback, a '68 Stringray or a '70 GTO.

i agree all of the big three should be making smaller turbo diesels and tring them out in all different cars and small trucks and instead of laying off all the people in assembly plants why dont they fire the vp's three assisants and their assisants people today are just to lazy thats why you can make a killing mowing grass

I don't think you're going to diesels in passenger cars in the U.S. on a large-scale basis until there's a breakthrough in emissions treatement, or a way to get the NOX levels way down. Supposedly, there are some technologies in development that will lower emissions at the combustion-chamber level, rather than having to rely on bulky and expensive after-treatment. Once that happens, you may see more passenger diesels, but even then, I think a lot of the OEs are going to take a "wait & see" attitude.

LMAO !!!!
The OE's have been playing "wait & see" since the Olds 5.7 ...... this is status quo for them.

i understand the possible difficulty in selling diesel passenger cars to some of the diesel challenged people we got in this country, but i really dont see why jeep hasnt been putting a diesel in the wrangler since the 90s. I think it would sell like hotcakes now, but it would have been even better to have been able to get a diesel in a jeep before "clean" diesels came along.

You guys heard about this new Mahindra pickup coming out next year? It's an Indian company, but they've been making farm equipment forever, and from what I've heard, their tractors are pretty rock-solid. I don't know how well that will translate into trucks, but I'm hopeful. It's going to have a 2.2L 4-banger turbodiesel. I've heard about 150 hp and 300 lb./ft. of torque. Sure, it's not a stump-puller, but I think it could be a good workhorse for lighter-duty jobs.
