I have a buddy with a 96 F-250, and he was trying to sell it to get a common rail dodge, but has decided that he just loves his 96 ford too much, so if we can find the motor and trans, we are gonna put probably an 04 Cummins with the NV5600 in his truck. Im aware of the extra difficulty of using a common rail instead of the 12 valve, but it will be a lot more unique, with more stock power and more adjustability with the power, being able to use a shift on the fly tuner instead of 12 valve fuel plates. Anybody got any advice about any parts of the swap, unless its keep the powerstroke, ha, and unless its use a 12 valve, other than that any help would be great.

does anybody know what transfer case is in his 96 F-250 automatic, its the manual transfer case. Will it bolt up to the NV5600?

I would sugjust just pull the whole drivetrain out of both rigs and do the swap that way.  There should be a tag on the transfer case on the case half bolts, the book I got says it's a Borg-Warner 13-56.  Check the tag to be sure, but I dont know if it will bolt up, I have my doubts it will.

I wonder why they would want to deal with the wiring for a Common rail injection system. The old school mechanical is better( can run WVO in it) PLus it is a simple swap. Also you should look at getting a 10 speed eaton-fuller transmission. Then you would have a cool truck( smiles)

Just think of the 8.3 cummins in a ford F 250?

Schield has a complete common rail crate engine with a stand alone ecm tuned by bosch it debuted in the spring of this year. Its setup to drop into any thing you can think of and work perfectly. They will probably be of help to you in this project. There unit is a little pricey however coming in at just under $35,000. But it does dyno at 1049 hp and 2100 ft-lbs. So you do get what you pay for at least. The Eaton tranny is possible you will just need to find the right transmission adapter for the back of the engine. The 8.3 however would be a waste, for starts its almost 10 inches longer than the 5.9 so some extensive engine compartment mods will be necessary, at there max they only made 275 from the factory and they use a PE inline pump which is hard to get parts for so turning it up might not go well, on top of all of that its nearly 250 lbs heavier than its little brother. If you could squeeze a DT466 in there you would have something, parts are every where you can make 1000 hp easy and the whole thing is simple to work on. The diesel tractor guys have been hot rodding these for years making 2500 hp or more.

I was thinking less about power and more about longevity. ALthough having a diesel that isn't seen in a pickup is what i find interesting!

I found out that NISSAN is going to have a diesel engine option in the TITAN but only for commercial purpose to start. I know that Nissan have made some great diesels in the past. SO it would be interesting to see how the diesel Titan is like
