NEW TRUCK! WHAT SHOULD I GET?

Im in the market for a new truck. Im definatly getting a diesel but not sure which to look into. My family has always had chevys and ive never had any problems out of mine. Im probably going to buy used because im looking at something around 20k. But what do you guys think?
I'll be doing mostly just everyday use and pulling trailers. Usually just normal trailers, but occasionally a gooseneck. I know Duramax and Cummins are powerful and Ford trucks are pretty tough. But i think id rather have a little more under the hood that Powerstrokes put out. Any and all feedback is appreciated. Thanks!

Dodge with the Cummins.
Search the forum for more info and you'll see why.

doge has one of the best motors and a ok truck, chevy good truck ok motor, ford ok truck and ok motor, but if are gonna tow and want good mileage then the cummins is your best bet. believe its the motor choice for the f650
I burn more diesel and run more miles in a week the most of you people do in a month. ctds that have been used 97 3500, 98.5 3500, 98.5 3500,01 3500, 03 3500. those that are being used 06 3500, 07 3500. and yea these trucks earn their living

well i agree the powerstrokes dont quite have the same power numbers but think more politically...where is dodge in the world right now, where is chevy and where is ford. obviously im a ford loyalist but the new 6.4L will have plenty of power to get you where you need to be. has the best quality in the cab and the whole frame is just more capable. plus the new dodges have the worst cooling system i have ever seen.
not sure if its just me but i have seen more "newer" dodges on the side of the road throught this summer.

what is wrong with the cooling system havent heard anything at all about it. funny everything i have passed sitting on the side of the road with their hoods up and towing have been fords, they dont seem to like the 100 degree heat we have here in Texas

powerstroke1258, if u had read his post he said around 20k
my personel choice is the cummins in anything with a standard. if u get an auto, plan on upgrading the tranny if u get a dodge asap. if u have to have an auto, and if u dont plan on upgrading it, then id say get the duramax with an allison.

o and me personaly, id look at buying a 97-98 dodge 12 valve with a 5 speed. they will have the biggest pump out of the 12 valves. if u get an auto 12 valve, should get it around 7500-10,000 u will have around 10,000 left over to upgrade. and id get a fully built auto, and have a bullet proof truck for the most part, and still have roughly 5,000 left over to blow on performance. good luck with the truck search

Look, Ford does have the best interior and not a single person can argue this.
But are we talking about how cushy the seats are, or the $500 million in warranty work done to the engines? And even though the Duramax has its problems with cracked/leaking injectors, you don't see a half billion dollar warranty repair bill, do ya?
Ford's truck frame is indeed a fantastic piece of engineering, but if the engine can't move the frame the only thing you have is a nice display model of fantastic engineering.
As for the newer Dodges along side of the road, I think all three have had issues with new engines when they came out. The 6.7 Cummins has been out just over 2 years now so there is going to be some issues neither Dodge nor Cummins have seen. Can I use this same excuse when the new Ford 6.7L Scorpion comes out and we find it has some issues with it, too?
Also understand I'm not loyal to any brand, but went with what the research I did told me I wouldn't have a problem with later on. Do the research on your own and you'll find what you need.

M1. . .I have to agree with you.
I am not sure what Powerstroke means by bad cooling systems. . . I don't have any issues with mine. . . I never heard of any either.
And you are right, Nobody can dispute the Ford towing capabilities, but Dodge is right there too with the new 6.7. You can't argue that the Cummins is top of the line. And Ford has had it's share of engine bloopers too.
Frankly, unless it's a Kenworth or equal, they're all junk! I prefer the Dodge brand. Why? Not because the interiors are great. (I hate the seats) Because they have the engine.
Dodge will be fine. If the Krauts hadn't rapped the company, they would have been with Ford in stability.

We have many trucks in our fleet I think every truck has pros and cons here is my 2 cents on each. Goverment Motor no need to say anything else If you dont care politicaly excellant motor trans low rider truck suburban cruiser made for the pavement I think it a bit cheap that the worst part of the truck is the only part gm makes they went to allison to get trans and the japanese to get there motor i personally think weeek no wonder they went under. Dodge If you aspire to hot rod the best diesel by far, Stock not much advantage in present year, "everyone says get dodge great fuel economy" that just is not so today the 21 mpg of 06 are gone they all get crap for fuel not just the ford we here so much about. That diesel also not made by dodge but a least American the trucks have come a long way since the 90's but weak trans and small problems in the front end (wandering steering, wheel bearings, and axle knuckles). Ford Lots of problems we see reported with 6.0 we have an 06 the boss drives small issue with alt needing replaced water in fuel light on every two weeks have not had major problem but am waiting Interesting fact we have 88000 miles on that ford 6.0 not bashing but our 02 dodge with cummins had been in for injector pump by this time 75000 plus we had replaced the tow mirror every winter always broke when adjusted. Niether truck is driven hard just tow trailers We dont hot rod our trucks maybe that is what is saving our 6.0? back to subject I have respect for ford for when times get tough they just get to work since GM went on welfare and FIAT bought Chrysler Ford developes the best hybrid car better than Toyota, Is bringing us a new gas 6.2 motor, And developing a new from ground up Diesel spending the bank on R&D trying not to make same mistakes that they did with 6.0. All GM has bought is the Camaro While cool most can not afford And for the first time in history a line of cars and trucks that the goverment can shut down through onstar any time thay want. No matter what you drive if your American you have to be proud of these Ford facts if they fail in near future well its is the end of the American owned car company and we will be all driving whatever Obama or Pelosi wants us to. Sorry for long post Got me monologuing again! Thanks

i have used all 3, the cummins engine is fine but the auto tranny is horrible and never had good breaks on it even when we replaced every thing. (it was a 95) then i had an 03 dmax with 283k miles on it and to be honest that was a sweet truck, had it for a year and halfe put good miles on it and never had a problem, now i have an 01 f250 superduty 7.3 made it single shot aftermarket turbo pipes (since they always leak) strait pipe and DPtuner, so far it drives good but that thing is so loud in the cab it wont even let you argue with your wife. so far id go for the dmax because its the quietest, reliable and far the best tranny if you look auto. ps. test drive them and choose for yourselfe because if you listen to all of us you´ll buy all 3 or nothing.

If you want a TRUCK get a ford, if you want something less get one of the others. If you do your research you can set a ford up to run with 95% of the other two mfg. I don't like the car front end on a chevy. As for dodge, well that says it right there DODGE(stay away), only thing they are good for is a protective wrapping for the motor.

I know Chevy has the IFS on their trucks, which makes it drive like and act like a car. Since when did Dodge have something similar?

Didn't mean to imply that MarineOne. I didn't punctuate my post properly, fixed though.
