I have a 2006 ford 6.0L. I know that engine is'nt the greatest thats why I am interested in changing it out for a cummins. Anyone know the cost of something like that? I've seen a lot of people that do that. Also what cummins model is the better I guess u could say for power modifications? Not to familiar with cummins. Any input would be great.

My advice. Sell the Ford. Get a Dodge with a Cummins.

There's another post on this, and the swap will run you upwards of $15,000 or more.  You can find late model Dodge trucks with the Cummins for slightly more, at around $22,000 to $24,000 so you really need to ask yourself if you want to spend that kind of money on the swap.

now whether your going to just put the motor in or get a whole new truck either go with the 2nd generation 5.9L 12 valve cummins engine with a standard tranny or a 3rd generation 2003 or 2004 5.9L 24 valve common rail cummins with a standard those are the very best engines cummins has made even know they are all great. you can find a 2nd generation dodge cummins truck from anywhere from $6000 $15000 depending on the mileage condition and year

Smoke,

I am all over this. I am putting a 5.9L 12v Cummins in my Excursion (6.0L diesel). The cost really depends on if you do the work yourself. If you happen to be mechanically savvy, then expect to save about $5,000. My personal goal was to make 500+Hp/900+Lb-Ft of torque. The cost of an remanufactured 1997 5.9L 12v engine on ebay is about $5,000-$6,000, Complete. The twin turbo kit I am putting on is about $3,500. Head studs, $400. Injectors, $500.  Exhuast manifold, $350. Intake, $250. No fuel plate, No Cat. Straight pipe it. And you'll be looking at about 450hp-500hp at the wheels. The engine will be about $10,000 with a good deal. Transmission is up to you, I personally am going to go with an Allison 6 speed with stand alone computer. Transmission plate ($400)came from "Destroked.com", visit this website when you have the chance, drop a call to them, they know their game. The Allsion is going to come to about $6,400, built, with stand alone computer. Engine mounts are going to be about $400. Intercooler you're looking at $1,300 (100% aluminum - Marine told me).

Engine - $10,000

Transmission - $6,400

Radiator - $1,300

Mounts - $400

Total - $18,100 (You doing all the work...)

Reality sucks,

i would say the 5.9L 24 valve common rail would be the best for modificatioin because you dont have to do alot to it to get lots of power out of it considering its all ready got lots of power banks sells all the parts you should need to make that motor what you want it to be.

I considered the 24v as well. But, as for cost effectiveness, power potential, lack of emmisions equipment, lack of computer, and ease of installation... The 12v is superior. You simply can't kill a 12v.
