I recently had my timing belt changed and ever since the veh smokes black (mostly only in 1st gear, worse cold). I asked the dealer if they could have retarded the timing, but they say the veh won't even start if the timing isn't right. I did change my #3 glowplug (looked bad) and the smoking seems to be less noticable. Turbo looks clean. Any ideas?

Run it hard and blow it out. It's a diesel and if you don't get on it once in a while they will "carbon up" some.
Don't need to be an Indy car driver, but don't drive like Grandma either.

Sounds like a boost leak, especially if you can't get decent power till you hit 1800 RPM (more boost being produced than leaking). Have the boost tubes checked out or just make some soapy water and rub it on the boost tubes and connections to check for leaks.
