I have the chance to purchase 2 6.2 motors and a whole truck for $400.00. One has a spun bearing the other has a head bolt hole that needs helicoiled. I have a 84 crew cab dually that I wanted to put a diesel in and thought this might be a economical way to do so. My Questions are : 1) Are these 6.2's a fair power maker and will they pull this dually with a 2500# (unloaded weight) trailer ? 2) The one motor I’m unsure of the year the one in the truck is an 83 I’m pretty sure they are within a year or 2 of each other, are these mechanical or computer driven?
Any suggestions. help, or info greatly appreciated.
Jim

You'll see 185 to 200 hp max from a 6.2L engine, and should be able to pull 3 to 4 tons easily.
It's mechanically driven, so there is no computer and you'll be fine putting it into a different truck.

there was 2 motors a light duty and a heave duty one, the hd was in some 3/4 and all the 1 tons light duty was in 1/2 tons and 3/4. when you put back to gether advance the timeing on the pump a little and make sure your time is exact on the timing chain and you will have a good running motor for what it is. check the heads for cracks because they a very prone to cracking between the valves
I burn more diesel and run more miles in a week the most of you people do in a month. ctds that have been used 97 3500, 98.5 3500, 98.5 3500,01 3500, 03 3500. those that are being used 06 3500, 07 3500. and yea these trucks earn their living

Who was the manufacture of chevy/GM's diesel engines before the duramax?

Ok I am going to purchase this 1983 chevy truck that has a 6.2 not sure of the code on this engine. This truck also comes with a 6.2 j code (the one with the serp belt setup) question is the j code has blown a rod (not sure of the extent of damage to block crank or other internals) what is difference on the j code compaired to the older ("n" or "l" code ?) angines ? Is it just the top end and serp setup or is there a difference in the bottom end also ? I was wanting to make the best motor possible out of the two bad ones.
Thanks Jim

FYI - The 1983 is the only year head that used a coarse thread injector of any of the 6.2s and the 6.5s never did.

You don't want to turbo a 6.2L engine. The compression ratio on this engine was approximately 21.5 to 1, so adding a turbo will simply lift the heads off the block.
You'll need to do some major bottom and top end work to a 6.2L to turbo it because you'll need to decrease the compression ratio down to around 16 to 1, plus adding all the oil lines for the turbo, etc.
If you want an early GM diesel with the turbo, stick with a 6.5L.

mine is the last yr that 6.2 was in production..but what makes me think it a 6.5 is the sticker on the driver side valve cover that sayes 6.5 and gives the stats on hp and injection timing and has the heat shield right valve cover.the air fliter sayes 6.2.so witch sticker do i trust? she has over 440'000 km on her iv heard bad 6.5 engines before i have one in my grave yard but it a 95 and i think it jusy need a set of heads. it died @ 380km. the chilton book i have say that the 6.2 and the 6.5 have the same compressoin ratio...is that true?

Since the 6.5L is turbocharged it won't have the same compression ratio as a 6.2L. IIRC, the 6.5L has a compression ratio around 16 to 1.
The engines are almost identical, and some parts are interchangable so don't go off some stickers alone.

Ok I have been doing some investigative work and I believe I have a C code in the truck I purchased (all original). and the other is a "599" block witch I believe is a J code with the serp setup. if I use the heads from the J code is there anything else I should use from the j code motor ??

Nope, the heads should be all you need.
