What will cause thick black smoke when accelerating and going up hills? I also have about a 30% loss of power. The problem just started recently. The f250 has an ATS turbo and 80k mi on it. I know almost nothing about diesel motors, this is my first. Any help someone can give me will be greatly appreciated.

Check your intercooler tubes.  Sounds like they're either loose or you have a hole in one.

Buy a Haynes or Chiltons book for it if you don't have one already.
