How would I go about installing a tachnometer on an old IDI jetta, do I use the alternator or do i have to drill a hole to mount a crankshaft sensor? I have also heard that the alternator driven tacjs aren't that accurate. Could someone help me out?

The only way I know to get an RPM reading off a diesel is a crank position sensor. I don't know if I've heard of an "alternator" driven tach. On gassers, the rpm is typically taken off the ignition signals, but since diesels don't have spark plugs, you can't do that.
