MarineOne: So I guess $500 million in warranty work that Navistar stuck Ford with is a good thing?
And you wonder why Ford dropped Navistar like a hot potato.
Kris
No its a terrible thing. You are absolutely right! I wish Ford made better decisions with their choice of diesel engine provider. Now, Navistar did get it right with the 6.4L PSD. Stock their not great, but with an intake, exhaust, and aftermarket tuning (like Spartan Diesel Technologies) they can make 590+ rwhp no problem. The 5R110 will hold up to that great too, something most auto. trans cant say.
Anyway, I still think its about time Ford made their own diesel. Control their own destiny. Now, I'll probably still get the 2010 Dodge Ram. Its gotta a proven Cummins diesel engine, 6-speed manual, proven exhaust brake, new improve suspension components, great looks, etc. I'll wait to see how the new Ford diesel, new trans., etc does before I spend that kind of money.

oh haber nothing you could post would upset me. i find your reaction way to humourous to get bothered. as far as the cat in a ford dont really pay to much attention to what size f series runs a true diesel and not a glow plug v. as far as the miles go i run anywhere to 500 to a 1k a week and still avg 16 mpg with a 4x4 drw and the ford does what maybe 12 from what i have heard when its holding together. like i have always stated i use whatever product works the best no matter who makes it. if honda had a 1 ton that performed better then anybody elses then i would be driving it. what i dont get is guys who drive a brand and defend it even tho it spends more time at the mechanic or at the gas pumps. i hope you and your family have a wonderful christmas
I burn more diesel and run more miles in a week the most of you people do in a month. ctds that have been used 97 3500, 98.5 3500, 98.5 3500,01 3500, 03 3500. those that are being used 06 3500, 07 3500. and yea these trucks earn their living

Smoken,
There is absolutely NO excuse what Navistar did to Ford, and there is NO excuse why Ford let Navistar do it for so long, other than Ford was contractually obligated to use that engine.
There are a couple of reasons why I believe this to be true. The 6.4L PSD was the first reason why Ford got messed over. The technology on that engine wasn't proven and they rushed it to market because the 6.0L PSD simply couldn't comform to the new emissions standards.
The second part was the blind loyalty Ford owners have. I still don't understand why folks would rave about how good their trucks are when they spend more time in the shop than a BMW. There comes a time when, as a consumer, my voice will be heard. Ford owners didn't do this and we all see how that turned out.
It looks like Ford did their homework on this engine and I want it to success simply because its a diesel .... and at the end of the day this is what it all comes down to.
