Ok, i need some input from diesel experts on this one.
I have a 1980 Monte Carlo SC in storage and i dont know what to do with it. I've done the whole beefed up gas engine deal...gets boring fast, and i just love the sound of a diesel running.
Im really considering a diesel swap mated to a TH350 or TH400. But, what engine should i use? So far i've considered a 3.9L and 5.9L Cummins. GM 6.2 or 6.5L, even a older powerstroke.
I've seen this done in several other cars and would like some input, suggestions and more info before i dive into this swap as it will be done over a year or two.
For right now, id be happy with a stock setup, preferably turbo'ed. But, I would take a N/A setup. Im not looking for massive power, Just something i can cruise around in, turn heads and get great fuel milage in.

You might want to research the Duramax build they did on "Pimp My Ride", which ended up being a souped up biodiesel burning Duramax.
IIRC, it was supposed to be like 800hp and 30 MPG.

could go with a duramax. just dont have that kind of money. thats the reason i was looking at the older diesels first. dont cost alot to get ahold of and if i like what i get. i can always upgrade more.

If you were going for performance, I'd say Duramax would be the way to go, since it's the lightest of the big diesels, most compact, and can be tuned for a lot of power. 12-valve Cummins are easier to find, but they're big hosses, and heavy. You could do the 3.9 Cummins 4-banger, but they shake like a wet dog, so if you're looking for smooth, definitely not the top choice.
In terms of the easiest swap, I would probably guess the old 6.2 normally-aspirated GM diesel from the trucks. Doesn't have a ton of power, but is closest to the small-block in terms of weight and size.
