Weird Tranny problem?

I have a 97 GMC Sierra with the 6.5L and 4 speed over-drive automatic (700R4 right?)I have never had a problem with her up until about a month ago. I can be driving along and everything's good until I am at about 80km/hr. The truck shifts from 3rd to 4th smoothly but about 50% of the time she downshifts to 3rd after being in 4th!? It happens on level road at anytime of the day I am confused as to what it could be? I have a couple ideas but I would appreciate some info from people more experienced 1. I don't think the tranny filter has ever been changed (Truck has 265,000 km on it) Could a plugged filter cause it to constantly want to downshift? or 2. Could it be an electronic module? (Patentiometer?) Kickdown engaging? (Can't see it otherwise it would do it in other gears...) or 3. Is the tranny getting old and just starting to slip? Any help or idea would be perfect I just hate driving along and next thing the rpm is upto 3k, so you gotta let off the pedal until it's good again... If you need more info I should be around over the next few days Thanks!

Sounds like you're losing pressure on 4th gear/OD and it downshifts from it.

It's not the 700R4, but the newer computer controlled version of it (I can't recall its model number right now).  Drop the pan expecting to see a lot of gunk and quite possibly a rebuild needed.

Hmm Hopefully not a rebuild, it looks like it could be quite a feat :? I will try a new filter and flush and see if that helps at all (Gunk might be making it lose pressure right?) Thanks Marine Hopefully there will be more comments

No, the gunk probably screwed up the valve body which would explain the shuttling between 4th/OD and 3rd due to lack of pressure from the gunk gunking it up.

I haven't seen many of these get past 200k miles without a rebuild.
