im am having lift pump trouble . the codes i get are p0088 and p0628. according to the code scout its fuel rail pressure to high and low voltage on the lift pump. now the problem i have is where the *%$! is the lift pump in tank or out and is it in the engine compt. or at the tank all my buddies have different opinions. my truck acts as if it is not getting fuel and/or running on 3 or 4 cyl. then it will quit for a while and be fine. i would like to fix this my self and not have to pay the dealership gobs of money to diagnose the problem and fix it. oh yeah i have replaced a fuel pump near the tank and the one i took out was aftermarket. since then my fuel guage will go from having fuel to showing empty and a warning light and bell going off. i think its got gremilins in the wiring.

could this be from a bad sensor or something causing the computer to change the way the cummins runs. its fine and all the sudded it will start doing that again for a day then stop and be fine for 2 or more weeks. it has had or still does have programing in it and i wonder if that has any thing to do with it.

its an 04.5 and before i got it it looks to have had some type fuel pump installed, itnake, possibly propane injection, a programer, 5" stack in the bed, and maybe other stuff too, that i am not able to see. but all that was taken off before i got it it only had 58k miles on the display too. it now has a k&n itnke and filter and 5" exaust out the rear and a small in line fuel pump near the fuel tank, i have replaced it with a new one 2 weeks ago. i wish i could find the original owner and find out just what was done with it and what it was used for cause, i bought it to pull my tractor and dozer and with 4.10 gears and 48re trans. it doesnt pull as good as my old 90 model f 250 7.3, and that just aint rite. my father in law has a 01 3500 with the same set up as mine and it will out pull it all day long but he cant touch me on the race track.

Can you be more descriptive of what this pump looks like?
I would just bite the bullet and install a FASS system and be done with it.
I strongly urge you change that K & N to something else like maybe an AFE. Cummins and K & N don't like each other. It's rumored Dodge will not warranty a diesel with a K & N also. Not that it applies to you, but from experience, I had an K & N chew up my impellers on my 04. in 20,000 miles too. Just my .02

it has a in line fuel pump that came from advanced auto parts about 3 in. long and 2 in. in diameter and the pressure on it is from 3 to 6 psi. the one installed by the other owner was taken off but the mount bracket was left on. a buddy has the fass and the bracket looks the same on his, thats why i know it had a fuel pump like that at one time.

oh i didnt mention that i am putting banks ram air on in place of the K&N. i dont like the K&N because it pulls air from the engine compt, and its a pain to get back together after cleaning.

I think you need more like 12 PSI for the CP3. I forget. The 6.7 needs 15. But it's not just the pressure, it's the volume also. It sounds like you have a gasser pump on there. It neither has enough pressure or volume.
Not trying to stomp on any toes. . . You might be best to go with a pump made for the application. That's why I suggested the FASS
