So here it goes. I own a 1985 Chevrolet truck with a 6.2 liter diesel. When it starts it runs very good with no issues, however every once in a while the motor will not start. It is getting fuel to the fuel filter on the firewall. If I pour fuel into the intake the motor will start and then will run fine again. This happens maybe once a week, however I don't drive this truck very often. I purchase a used, but tested, injection pump which came off a military vehicle. I put this pump on my truck along with a new fuel shut-off solenoid and no change to the problem.
Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong with my truck.
Thanks in advance,
Matt

You kind of have us shooting in the dark on this one because with the information you gave us we have to assume the injection pump has been ruled out and there's no doubt the fuel solenoid is getting juice with the key on. So here are some ideas. The fuel return line is connected to the injection pump through a fitting screwed into the upper pump body. This fitting is actually a fuel pressure regulator and the injection pump requires a minimum pressure of 3.5 or 5 psi, not sure which. Now let's back up a little further, the 1985 has a mechanical fuel delivery pump mounted above the oil pan and below number 2 cylinder on the side of the block. It's possible that the pump is not making enough pressure so start here first by putting a fuel pressure gauge on the pump and crankng the engine to check pressure. Either one is a easy test and inexpensive to replace once you determine which one to replace.

Your question peaked my interest since I just completed a four year spare time frame up restoration this spring of a 1976 Chevy SWB that I bought new in 1976. On the brag side, I'm running an anything but stock 6.5 turbo diesel, 700R4 transmission, 208 transfer case, 3/4 ton differentials 4.10 ratio (rear widened 3"), four wheel disc brakes, 4 inch suspension and 1 1/2" body lift, custom built polished aluminum bumpers and grill, leather interior, total Pioneer sound and the list goes on. In the last five months I have put on 16K miles using this truck on the construction of a cross-country pipeline in less than perfect conditions averaging 21 mpg plus or minus. Haven't got a clue what the cost or resources are in Dubai but the simplest and cheapest swap for you is going to be to a naturally asperated 6.2 or 6.5. This would require the engine complete with flywheel, exhaust manifolds, intake plentum and filter, starter, radiator from a late 80s suburban or crew cab, delivery and injector pump. There are variables to everything I have said and so then would the costs vary. If I were pricing this proposal for a customer it would be in the ball park of $6000 using new, recon and salvaged items. We are having good luck with other swaps such as to the Cummins and duramax but they are more costly and can require total running gear upgrades and frame modifications.
