99 diesel noise

Ever since I bought my truck - 5yrs ago, it's been the loudest truck around. Recently it seems even louder . It rattles like a m-fr at idle, but when you get on the gas it goes away. Iv've been told it could be the tranny or a bearing in one of the pulley driven ( extermn extredies) externals.(sorry my delete bttn is'nt working). It's a '99 7.3 no mods . Also , when it starts to get cold out , before it warms up it cycles in power. It makes a strong noise (like shhhhhh ) and then sounds normalr . ? After about ten min. this goes aaway . Any Ideas would be appreciated,
Orin

Need more details on your truck, like make/model, engine, tranny (auto or manual), and upgrades on it (whether or not you were the one that installed them), miles on the truck, etc.
The more info you give us, the better we can help you.

The 99's and some of the 00's had an issue with the TC rattling. That's what you're hearing... It's REALLY obnoxious, but I didn't start having any problems with mine until around 10K miles after I was chipped. The SHHHH sound you're hearing is the EBPV, and that's normal.

Hi Kris ,
Thanks for responding. I'm a liittle behind this week so I didn't see your response till today - sorry. It's a 99 Ford f-250 sd 7.3 ltr. turbo , aot auto trenny, 4wd. No mods that would affect the drivetrain - just hitch stuff.

I hope you mean the torque converter ? That sounds like where it's coming from.
Man it's loud! Will it go bad ? I have about 150,000 0n it so far. Also, what is the reason for the EBPV to do that , and why is that normal? Thanks,
Orin

The EBPV cycles to help warm the motor. If you want to get rid of it, I can point you in the right direction. And yes, the torque converter. It can go out at any time. And take your whole transmission with it.
I recommend changing it out. An OEM 6.0 TC is triple disk and has a slightly lower stall. John Woods makes an adaptor to install it. It works nicely!

if it does that when idling and is cold, that is the wastegate closing/constricting the turbo intentionally to work the engine to help it warm up. those 7.3's were programmed to do so even as early as the first '94's thru the late 02-03 7.3's Normal operation when just starting it up in the cold mornings as for the rattle, check with your mechanic, but the SHHHHHH noise is your turbo being choked to work warm the engine up. Good luck

I forgot to mention. If you had the TC lock-up mod, you could know for SURE it was your TC.

If you do the mod, leave your truck in park or neutral and hit the switch, the sounds should go away... If not, it's probably a cracked flex plate, but I doubt it.

Sorry to say, but I havn't heard of a TC lock mod.Is it a chip or a module add ?
I'd like to save my tranny before it is affected . Is it advisable to replace the TC
without rebuilding the tranny?A tr4ansmission shop told me to check the bolts on the TC , they weren't loose. Thaen they also mentioned the possibility oef the cracked flywheel. I still don't understand why that would make any noise, but I'll defer to the experts.
Thanks again,
Orin

Just a FYI, it is the EBV that causes that sound. The 1994-1997 trucks didn't even come with a wastegate, so there is no way the wastegate that doesn't exist could possibly constrict anything. You can gut the ebv and pedistal and you won't lose anything, but the annoying sounds and power loss. I didn't even notice it taking any longer to warm up either.

If you're worried about it, I would replace the TC. That's almost surely the issue. If you want to be sure, follow my instructions.
