has anyone heard anything more about subaru bringing thier diesel boxer to the u.s.? last i heard it was supposed to be here by '10. this is an engine that in an outback, can get 55 mpg on the highway. why have they not gotten thier asses in gear, and given the american market this engine? and on that note, where are the diesel cars that american companies have overseas, but not here? why have you forsaken me american car companies?

There was a lot of chatter last year about diesel models coming for 2010. At this point, it looks like it's probably going to be 2012 or later until we start seeing more passenger-car diesels. The only OEs that seem really committed to diesel cars in America are the Germans. Audi, VW, Mercedes and BMW are the only ones that currently have diesel cars on-sale, or will have them on sale in 2010.
Mazda has said they're looking at building a business case for diesels in the U.S. market, but haven't publicly committed to a timeframe for introduction. A LOT of companies are keeping a close eye on VW's success with the Jetta and Golf TDI. So far, they've been selling like hotcakes, so I'm sure it's just a matter of time until we see some more contenders in the diesel car market.
A lot of it has to do with emissions compliance, and the cost to be compliant relative to the expected sales.
