Roughly 100 hp and 70 ft/lbs of torque over stock. The auto slushbox isn't made for handling the power of the Cummins when it's stock and obviously won't handle upgrades well.
Depending on the mileage, these numbers can drop off quickly .... meaning that even these numbers would cause some damage.

there are lots of guys with high horsepower trucks and auto trannys, do you know what they're doing to handle say 1200 pounds torque? 400hp?

new tourque converters and $4500 trannies
I burn more diesel and run more miles in a week the most of you people do in a month. ctds that have been used 97 3500, 98.5 3500, 98.5 3500,01 3500, 03 3500. those that are being used 06 3500, 07 3500. and yea these trucks earn their living

New TC's and completely rebuilt transmissions that are way beyond what you think it would need but its the only way to keep maintenance down. Parts include new input shaft, output shaft, bands, clutch packs, valve body, etc.

i have a 97 12valve with 90hp injectors 0 plate straight exhaust and pump work...ive been through 4 auto trannys this year...thank god for warranties!! But anyways stock trannys only hold about 300hp maybe 350 at most before they eat themselves alive.
Oh and to sammyj they make billet shafts for about 1200 a piece haha not including the rest of the tranny.

Triple disc converter and a valve body would be a good place to start. I have that done to mine, and it holds strong at 400 hp at the rear wheels. Never been into it and its got 187000 on it. I keep expecting it to slip, but it hasn't yet. It gets filter and fluid changes religiously!!!!
