Great idea! It's possible for sure. I'm guessing you'll need an adapter plate to mate it to a transmission.

What type of engine is it? If it has a land loving counterpart I'm guessing you'd be able to bolt all of it's parts on bellhousing, water pump, and intercooler. Since the blocks are the same (marine and land) although might have a different alloy content. Does the marine engine have an exhaust manifold that has sea water running through it to cool it? I've only seen a few non outboard engines for boats.

I was on Volvo's website and it looks like the D6 is 5.5L. The gasoline engine is 5.7L, don't get that one...unless you want a gasoline (flamable) engine on your boat.
The D6-435 is rated for 435 hp and that's only 5.5L.
"The engine has common rail fuel injection system, double overhead camshafts, 4 valves per cylinder, turbocharger and aftercooler. Together with a large swept volume and the EVC system (Electronic Vessel Control), this results in world-class diesel performance, combined with low emissions"
