Guys I need help! Pulling a 24foot trailer gets my truck pretty hot. Its full of coolant and has some in the overflow. Clean air filter, EGT gauge stays under 1200, but the engine temp passes 190 and starts going up as the grades get steeper...could i need to replace the t-stat? Any other thoughts? any help is much appreciated!!!!

The thermostat would be my first guess at what the culprit might be. How many miles on it? There's a chance your radiator might just be clogged with gunk.

how high does it get i have seen 220 on mine pullin a load. check your radiator and between it and the intercooler mite have crap in between them
I burn more diesel and run more miles in a week the most of you people do in a month. ctds that have been used 97 3500, 98.5 3500, 98.5 3500,01 3500, 03 3500. those that are being used 06 3500, 07 3500. and yea these trucks earn their living

Guys, the truck has 204,000 on it and it will get to the redline-220'-degrees if i let it (never do), but as i'm going up hills the engine temp gauge starts climbing so rapid that i have to let off the throttle pretty quick or my "check guages" light will come on. I'm gonna start with replacing the t-stat, but if that doesnt work are there any after-market radiators that are better than stock that you guys know of? All this just started the within the last 5 pulls of my trailer and the pulls where less than 50miles each one way.
Thanks for the help Esanchez and PBR!!!!

I'd recommend the simple stuff first.
- Use a power washer to make sure the radiator doesn't have gunk in between the fins. Bugs and road grime should come out rather quickly, and you should see alot of it.
- Check your fan/.fan clutch. It might just be that your problem lies here and it's an easier and less costly fix.
- Flush the coolant. I do it every other year, if it needs it or not. You can also get an idea of problems if you check your coolant this way, so check it for gunk when you flush it.
- Flow test the radiator. This makes sure the cooling tubes aren't gunked up. If you replace the old radiator, hold on to it and have it checked out. Normally they can take the top and bottom ends off and run a small diameter rod through the cooling tubes to push out any extra garbage, and you've now got a spare if you need it.
