Hello I have a 1997 3500HD with approx 210,000 miles. The active codes are P0216 Injection timing control curcuit and P1214 Injector pump timing offset. This thing Smokes White like crazy(the fire truck actully came while i was running it!!! ) It runs extremely rough and dies at idle, however if you hold the throttle at a steady RPM around 2000-2500 the smoke clears up and the engine smooths out. The smoke smells like raw fuel and this engine doesn't use any coolant. About four months ago, I replaced the injection pump(it came with the PDM installed) and set the timing in the center of the slot, installed rebuilt injectors, replaced the turbo and removed the cat. It ran perfect untill now. If I clear the codes the engine runs good and idles good except that it sputters a bit and puffs white smoke while revving it to a high RPM with no load on it. after five or less minutes the codes come back. any ideas? Thanks for any help

Sounds like you have at least one bad injector. Even if you purchased new injectors they need to be pop tested. Also, you might try to retard your injection pump setting by turning it to the right relative to you behind the steering wheel no more than two degrees.

Yeah I will try the adjusting the pump timing. it is just so wierd that the thing will hardly run when the check engine light is on, and as soon as i clear it it runs good till the light comes back on.

Okay it runs fine until you get a CEL, right?
To me, this means all the hardware is working properly. Sounds more like a bad/faulty sensor that's affected by heat. Once it warms up it gets wacky and throws a code, the ECM throws the CEL, and it chugs like a drunk at an open bar.
What other codes can you get using the reader?

The only two codes are the ones I listed. They come back about five minutes after i clear them. I have a couple guys in town that say its prob the pmd but no one on this forum says their engine light comes on and it smokes like crazy when this PMD goes bad. I dont wanna throw three hundred buck at this thing till I feel a little more confident with the problem. Thanks, any help is appreciated

Relocate the PMD and see what happens.

Try checking the fuel pressure at the T-Valve. I got these kind of codes and suspect IP was not getting fuel.
Do you have a fuel line with an air leak? Take supply line off on exit side of front lift pump (if you have two fuel tanks). Check pressure. Check pressure at T-Valve.
Pull off fuel filter housing. Clean. You might be suprised how much junk is in this housing and thus limiting fuel input.
